Obviously there needs to be a multi-faceted approach. The status quo is very clearly not working. Just worth considering that there may be some merit to an expanded barrier.

You know illegal immigration is down over the past decade. Why is that?

so what if it is down, they are still trying to come in.

Agree.

Whether illegal immigration is up or down, really doesn’t matter. There should be zero illegal immigration. I am happy to advocate for better legal immigration policies. But I can muster zero support for encouraging illegal immigration.

People who are coming in are using A LEGAL FORM of immigration (check USA government site for asylum). So, no matter how many times your Fox GOD say, this is not illegal immigration.

What? These people are using a legal form of immigration?

So, walls cannot stop anyone to enter to US, is that what you are showing?

The men and women who are working the borders are the experts here. They know what is needed to slow down and stop illegal immigration across the border.

Congress should listen to them. #BuildTheDamnWall

I was pleasantly surprised that NPR published this story. There needs to be some honest discussions about what is needed to improve the current mess.

No. There are legal ways to apply for asylum. Walking over the border and living in a country undocumented is NOT the way to do it.

Show me your official government reference that it is illegal to apply for asylum once you have crossed the border. You cannot, because it is not.

DP here.
Hard to believe that someone crosses our border, lives here for a year or two, and when caught, says, "I am applying for asylum."
This is what is wrong with our laws.

I laughed at this response. Amazing how that PP completely invalidated his own point without even realizing. People are so stupid and simplistic.

Trump gives every appearance of being a racist buffoon, but certainly we need to improve parts of the fencing, wall, and security along the border. The republican dog whistle has always been to secure the border before changing the immigration system. I listened to the NPR radio show. It did seem like an honest, compassionate plea for help to discourage families from making the trek to the border. I think the problem with Trump is that he has politicized this issue to the extant that Democrats have to resist him. Trump is also locking down every legal way to come here as well. If wasn't doing that he might have a lot more support from independents for the wall.

Hell, I am old and I could even climb that wall. That is why we need additional funding. To replace and extend current barriers.
Now, the wall that Jim Acosta featured yesterday - no way could I climb that.
That is the type of barrier that is needed and for which funding is being sought.

Trump does not give appearance...he is a racist buffoons.

He does not give a rat's ass about solving immigration problem or border security. Democrats have proposed many immigration overhaul solutions in the past and GOP has refused. Democrats care about border security and solving immigration issue comprehensively. I am pretty sure the moderate republicans want that too - but then it will defang the right-wing side of the GOP and neuter Fox News crazies...they cannot use low income immigrants as boggyman to rile low income rural whites to vote for GOP once these issues are solved. They also cannot use low income immigrants as the excuse for the poor whites plight while enriching the top 1%. That is why we have not progressed on this issue ever.

The Democrats have also josef to completely politicize the issue. This is not one-sided and it is disingenuous to blame it solely on Trump. Most Americans disapprove of illegal immigration, but are okay with legal immigration. The Democrats want to lump it all together.

DP

No, it’s showing that there needs to be a better barrier so that people cannot simply climb right over it.

But you knew that, and are just being dense.

There's this new fangled thing called a "ladder". It's amazing.

And, a ladder is hard to hide. Simply carrying a ladder slows the intruder down. Our border agents would have ample time to catch them.
In other words, they would see the intruders coming.
A tall wall like the one Jim Acosta featured combined with the technology that the Trump administration is seeking as part of its border barrier package would go a long way on preventing criminals, rapists, gang members, drug dealers, and others from illegally entering our country. This is not rocket science.

You didn't see the border patrol agent speak yesterday, did you.
He said that in ONE DAY along an unsecured area of the border, they apprehended 450 people entering illegally. 135 of those people were from countries other than Mexico - including some in the Middle East.
