The ego doctors have is outrageous.

I have two doctors in my family - one’s a surgeon and the other’s a hospitalist - and they are the least empathetic, healing people in my family. They’re both hard-working, smart, and diligent, but neither is what I’d describe as being caring.

This practice of pelvic exams is a tradition from teaching. Some attendings still do it, some do not. I don't want to create undue fear, but once you are asleep, the surgical team forgets you are human due dignity and kindness. Seriously, your nurses will protect from a lot, however they also become sort of traumatized and awful behavior becomes normalized.

I'm thankful for women nurses. What can you do when a very creepy male nurse shows up?

Ask for a female nurse - word to the wise.

Same here. If patients only knew them in real life, they'd be shocked....and disappointed.

Medical professional chiming in: trust female pediatricians and nurse practitioners. Rest are awful.

Teach your kids to tell you about anyone "creepy". That's the word they can relate to. You don't need "proof" to report anyone. Not your job to investigate. You simply report.

Likewise. I have a radiologist in my family. He is cruel, and basically disgusted with people. He is also useless for common sense advice regarding general health. He also knows where he stands in terms of his status among other doctors, and will be a real jerk to those in less high status specialities, such as family practice. Really bizarre. However, these people are scientists who are expected to diagnose and treat. Not provide "care". That comes from nurses and anicillary staff.

More evidence that western medicine could use a restructuring, to ensure that healing is the main objective.

Critical care nurse here. OR nurse PP is spot on. I can't tell you how many times I've had to ask doctors (interns through attendings) to remember basic things like replacing linen on a comatose patient. While it's true that the hospital environment normalizes a lot of shocking events/behaviors/attitudes for those who work with patients, nurses are usually the hands-/ears-/eyes-on providers who step in to advocate for the patient and to share the patient's/family's concerns with the care team.

You can certainly request a female nurse, however there are now many males in nursing. Especially ER, OR, and outpatient surgery centers. You may not be able to have this request honored, depending on staffing. Don't ever worry about making this request either, because it is common. That said, as a nurse in a critical care unit, I work with several male nurses who truly set the standard for ethical, excellent care. It's person to person, and there are some very bad female nurses. In my experience, the doctors are the ones to be more careful about.

Hahahaha this is adorably naive and wishful. Healthcare in the US is NOT about the patient!!!!!!!! It's a corrupt business with goal of earning money and generating status among those who work in the field.

My best advice: don't get sick or injured. If you do, do not enter the healthcare system without a knowledgable and assertive advocate by your side. Chose female providers whenever possible, as they are less likely to sexually violate you. Via con dios.

This is why I always tell my doctors that I do not consent to any medical students practicing on me. I also try to stay away from teaching hospitals if I can help it.

This article is horrifying, especially the comments from the male medical students justifying the practice.

Haven’t read the article yet but not at all surprised.

Went to a new cardiologist recently - flirty and fratty at AGE 55 so it couldn’t even be chalked up to youth/lack of experience. Mentioned my relationship status - which wasn’t relevant to what was being discussed (wasn’t about support at home etc. Started a sentence with “since you have your shirt off . . . .” Uh I was in a gown not naked and I was only in a gown bc your nurse said it was needed for an accurate EKG. Honestly I was surprised he didn’t cop a feel - which he didn’t, the exam was respectful. And the bar has gotten so low that I find myself thinking - he’s REALLY credentialed/experienced, top hospital, he didn’t cop a feel — is the frat boy attitude SUCH a big deal? Jury is still out on that one. So if this is how 55 yr olds are behaving w a fully awake patient, I can imagine 23 yr old male med students.

And women pay these men who abuse their bodies. What a great system healthcare is.
