Girl Scouts sues Boys Scouts for including girls

GS now has robotics badges.

They should take this as a win and become the Scouts or Scouts of America. GS can give BS some tips on running a better product line and BS can give GS tips on better merit badges.

Because the GS badges seriously suck. Childcare, needlecraft, sewing, and folk dancing, ffs?

I'm married to an Eagle Scout. He can sew really well and learned through BSA. It's a needed skill for everyone. He hems our daughter's pants as well as my drapes! Don't put down sewing. It's taught in the military too.

I don't see the issue with childcare or folk dancing either, but they should be offered to both sexes.

I completely agree. And my Girl Scout daughters do camping, pinewood derby, archery, kayaking, orienteering, and more. I have literally never seen badges the likes of what was just posted.

That's a photo of a sash from the 1980s.

Yep, and my 5th grader just spent last Saturday 10-3 doing the three cyber-security badges. She has already done the citizen science ones, the robotics ones, and the engineering ones.

Almost 40 years ago. No way representative of what GS is all about nowadays.

Can only people actually familiar with GSA join the discussion? It's like I'm having a discussion with my dh who complains about Girl Scouts only learning how to decorate and make crafts (which wasn't true!). DH didn't want our dds joining GSA because of that.

I loved Girl Scouts and was very involved through hs even.

On the contrary I don't think we encourage the girls enough. Where are the riflery, hunting, business administration, geology, aviation, sailing, chemistry merit badges and courses for the GS?

I take it you haven't spent much time looking at the merit badges available in GSA.

Here is the current list of national Girl Scout badges: https://www.girlscouts.org/badgeexplorer
They cover a variety of topics, including outdoor skills, STEM, life skills, entrepreneurship, etc. It is up to an individual troop of girls (and their leaders) to decide what to pursue.

The GSA just introduced 30 badges this summer, including robotics, shocker. Don't act like they've been cutting edge for years or decades. And honestly it looks like this was in response to the BS doing better and opening up to all. They had to figure out how to do more than produce suzie homemaker badges.

Girl Scouts releases new badges in environmental stewardship, space science, robotics, and more to help girls create positive change in their communities—and beyond.

But pp is correct that there is not a hunting badge. GSA is too PC for that

We left the Girl Scouts because our local troop ( although very nice ) colored ended crafts. We are now in the Cub Scouts and I prefer their program. I posted above that I feel the cub Scouts are more family friendly. They are more open and welcoming two women in leadership positions whereas the Girl Scouts are much more guarded and view dads suspiciously. I am glad to hear that you are troupe was not like that at all.

Regarding the actual lawsuit and the name “scouts”- what other names could the boys scouts have adopted? There would’ve been a larger uproar had they called themselves the “boy and Girl Scouts”. “Scouts” is a good name. Sorry GSA.

Another important thing to remember is that girl scout troops aren't bound only to working on badges. If a troop wants to do something that isn't covered by an official badge, they are more than welcome to do so.

Alright GSA moms - explain to me why all their Financial Literary badges are so passive and honestly - weirdly worded.

Money Counts? Why not have an Accounting badge.

Give Back? Volunteerism badge would be better.

Comparison shopping? Umm, okay not touching that one.

My Portfolio? Jesus C - just call it Investment banking badge.

That's just the latest round of new badges, they've been updating the program for a long time now, since before the BSA change.
