Maybe they didn't realize you left your purse behind.
Honestly, OP, if I were one of your friends, it wouldn't have occurred to me that you didn't bring your purse with you unless you SAID "can you watch my purse while I go to the bathroom" because I always bring mine with me. That aside, I actually think it's weird that they got up to go to the bathroom...but not with YOU. Did you not say "I'm going to run to the ladies room?" before you dashed from the table? Usually when I'm out with girlfriends and one of us gets up to leave, this is said and whoever else has to go chimes in with "oh me too" or "I'll go with you"...so the part of your story that struck me as odd was the "they came into the bathroom when I was already in there" part. I mean, they didn't have to go when you left?...but then 4 minutes later they are all getting up to go?? Maybe you were the one who wasn't thoughtful, OP, when you dashed off to the bathroom unannounced?? (Okay, that's an exaggeration, obviously...but neither is anything to shut down a friendship over.) |
Yeah, that was an asshole move on their part. |
Had you guys paid the check yet? It seems weird that everyone left the table unless y'all were done for the evening. |
Why didn't you take your purse in the first place? It would never occur to me that someone left their purse behind. I've never done that. |
I didn’t need it in the restroom and assumed they would remain at the table while I excused myself for 5 minutes or so. It didn’t occur to me either of them would need to use the restroom in the short time I’d be gone-much less both. But I do accept that my purse is my responsibility and that I wasn’t explicit in asking them to watch it. |
The part I find most surprising is that you left your purse behind. I don't leave my purse unattended, period. It goes where I go. When I was young I had my purse flung over the back of a chair by its strap and a security guard came up and severely reprimanded me. Since then it stays tucked under the table or with me. |
+1. It would never occur to me that you left your purse behind. |
Your fault. Not their fault. |
Yes, I did announce that I’d be right back, that I was going to the bathroom. (However I did not ask anyone to watch my bag that was visible on the chair.) No one else had to go at that moment. |
They might not have noticed. When I leave my bag at the table with my kids I double check that at least one of them will stay there or take it with them if they had to leave. Lots of women bring their bags to the washroom so I wouldn't expect them to watch it unless you asked or mentioned you were leaving it. You might scan the table for bags but not everyone would. |
The check had been paid and I excused myself after boxing up my food and waiting for them to box theirs. |
+2 I wouldn't have noticed you left your purse on the chair (why would i?) and since you didnt say anything like "watch my purse" I definitely wouldn't have thought about it. |
They didn't leave your purse at the table, you did. |
I get your point and I already owned up to not asking anybody to watch it but trust me, it was visible. It was large enough to be seen across the room and one of the women had to actually lift it to get to her own purse as they’d been sitting in the same chair. |
So what happenned to your food - was that left at the table too or did they take it with them? |
