Supporting ACPS in the voting booth

With respect to the mayoral candidates, Wilson is definitely a stronger school supporter than Silberberg.

+100 No question. He is way better on schools.

The problem isn't the City Council Mayor with ACPS. The problem is the lackluster ACPS School Board. The later fails to address academics all while thinking building teach, rather than paying our teachers well enough to respect that they teach. It's not the buildings (many need replacement): our future (sadly as was our past) is with our teachers.

No way should Wilson be supported. Just read about some of his duplicitous actions here: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/60/731109.page He has been up to his eyeballs in the PYM scandal and is one of the lead people who had the opportunity to say something but purposefully did not. His actions are an embarrassment to us all.

PP, your link isn’t kind to either candidate. At least Wilson will support schools. Silberberg voted against funding for schools.

Wilson’s vote isn’t entirely pro-School. It’s more nuanced than that. He supports schools in his districts A and to some degree B. He is politically beholden to the district A members. That’s what he supports.

Look, I’m not thrilled with either candidate. But Silberberg is definitely not the right candidate for someone who cares about ACPS.

Why was the last comment about Silberberg being not the right candidate for someone who supports ACPS deleted?

You're right. Neither candidate is good for Alexandria. At this point our best options is to choose the person who will do the least damage.

Wilson has shown his true colors with the PYM fiasco. Do you really want someone so blatantly dishonest to be in charge of funding for our schools? As another person has pointed out, Wilson only cares about the schools in the right areas anyway. I don't know if it is that he has a problem with race or SES or what but I can't countenance that type of personality being in charge of funding our schools.

Silberberg may be clueless but at least she won't do any harm. Wilson has "I'm a Disaster for Alexandria" written all over him.

I received a flyer in the mail from Silberberg’s campaign touting her accomplishments on schools. If that’s not dishonest, then I don’t know what is, as she was the only one on the council to vote against higher funding for schools.

PP, I don't think increasing funding for schools will help ACPS. The problems with ACPS don't come from funding, they come from an incompetent school board and administration.

Without a doubt, additional funding was needed for ACPS buildings, and without a doubt, more than funding is needed to fix ACPS. Silberberg let it be known through her vote where she stands on ACPS, and for that reason, I will vote against her.

I really wanted to stay in Alexandria but could not for the life of me figure out how such a wealthy area had such an abysmal school system. The locals had so many differing views that I figured it was too complex of an issue to be solved before my children start school. Now I'm in a neighborhood in Fairfax with a lot of young families that care about the already well established schools. I miss Alexandria but did not want the stress of ACPS.
