If they didn't bother to show up for class why do you think they will show up for a minimum wage job? |
| They have to make money legally somehow to cover basic expenses, or wind up in jail. |
The life lesson learned here is that you don’t have to show up, that you can cut corners and chisel your way, but you will still get free stuff. |
|
I think it’s fine for this school year instead of scrambling and all.
Next year and for the future, absences shouldn’t be tolerated and you’ll have to face the consequences. |
| It starts in elementary.. Some of my students miss school to get their hair done. |
|
These students armed with their fake diplomas will get crappy jobs and have zero work ethic becasue they won’t prioritize showing up to work. Rewarding bad behavior
won’t help these young ADULTS. Forcing them to repeat the grade or pursue some other alternative offers one more chance to teach them to care before all is lost. Grosso is a disaster. He better lose the next time around. |
Because black hair in its natural state looks unkempt to most white people working in education. Because braiding takes hours and can’t be done overnight. Because it’s 20% off on Mondays which means Mom can afford it. Because white middle class kids miss school to go on vacation, but that’s fine, right? Signed, A teacher |
I'm torn on this one. Having a child with special needs, who barely graduated from high school in a system that was find to push him out with a worthless certificate of attendance, I know that without a HS diploma, there is no chance of full time work with health insurance and paid sick leave. Even with the HS diploma, the available work pays crap, but at least there is some work that is available. If even a handful of the people that graduate because of this are able to get jobs, then it helps some people. And, who is hurt by it? Certainly not the kids who aren't successful even after graduating without meeting requirements because they would likely not have stayed in school for another year to get a "legitimate" diploma. |
So you justify kids missing school to get their hair done snd blame it white educators? Right. |
Black hair cut short and left natural is acceptable to everyone. No need for elaborate hair styles for children. Same for white kids. I am not going to take my curly-haired DD out of school for the day to get a blowout. |
Ugh. I mean, if we’re going by the logic of...well...they didn’t meet any requirements put forth to graduate but they’re doomed if they don’t...why even have requirements at all? |
Did you miss all the posts about UMC parents taking their kids out of school for cruises? |
This; black can never win. |
I'm not going to get worked up about an elementary school child missing a few days for stuff like this, no. Once a week would be excessive, but 3-4 times a year is reasonable. White parents don't hesitate to miss a week for travel. |
Do DC high schools really have “requirements” ? This whole issue is basically about some DC administration decisions made that is was better to water down the diplomas so that the poor kids could get one by just staying enrolled. Better to have them out there with something opposed to nothing. Put the emphasis on ward 3 families to do APs to show colleges that they are the normal DC residents. |
