How Long Before You Started Seeing Results from Intermittent Fasting

It's a short read and really breaks down the science behind it. It also helps reverse the brain washing we get in this country about opposition to fasting. My wife dropped 55 pounds in 5 months doing IF and NOT working out. I'm a male, so I know no one is impressed with me losing weight, but I did drop 25 pounds when I started FWIW. I know 16:8 is really popular, but we do 2 fasts a week that range between 24 to 30 hours on non-consecutive days. If you read the scientific research in Brad's book behind why the longer fast is better than daily 16:8 it will all make sense. We continue to do IF weekly to this day for just weight regulation; in fact I'm fasting right now. It's so nice because it completely eliminates our need for counting calories and other food tracking burdens. Right now I'm 37, and I can still wear the same 34 inch waist pants that fit me in college. If you need any encouragement or other advice feel free to ask me.

How much muscle do you have though?

I have a decent amount. Once I figure out how to send or upload a picture, I will show you.

Ok, let's see if this works...I just took this pic this morning as I was getting ready to go to the gym. I'm 6'8" (tall I know) and 37 and about 245 pounds. I didn't work out when I started fasting and went all the way down to 225 just doing fasting and not weight lifting. Then I added weight lifting while maintaining 2 24 hour fasts per week. I have stayed lean and added 20 pounds of muscle. I can't really give experienced advice on the 16:8 thing, as I tried it and didn't really get any results. It was so much work because I still had to count calories and track everything and I was getting so bogged down, I wanted to quit. I needed something that fit in my with my lifestyle and that's how I ended up where I'm at. Like I mentioned above I recommend and use the protocol taught in Brad Pilon's E-book Eat Stop Eat. It's much simpler, and from what I can tell, much more effective in contrast.

What's the timing of eating in relation to working out? And what do you

Here's how my week looks. When I am in weight loss mode (AKA I need to lose weight not maintain): Monday morning, I start my day with a normal breakfast and after that it's just water (nothing with artificial sweeneter) until Tuesday noon, then I eat lunch. In essence I skip 3 meals and that results in about 30 hours. Then I'll skip a day or two of fasting and do that again. The beauty of a 30 hour fast is that it also shrinks your stomach, kinda like when you have a stomach bug, and your first meal afterwards you're about 5 bites into the meal and you feel stuffed? It's kind of like that, so it works nicely to also curb the overeating abilities. When I'm in just maintenance mode (NOT weight loss mode) I just skip 2 meals, so I essentially fast Monday from breakfast to Tuesday breakfast and then do that again later in the week. It results in about a 23ish hour fast depending on how I time it.

As far as the relation to working out, I go to the gym and do heavy weight resistance training every weekday morning. It doesn't matter if it's in the middle of a fast or not, I workout in the morning, rotating through targeting different muscle groups for each day of the work week. Your body has enough sugar stored in the liver to sustain you for 16 to 18 hours and it's not until then that you start to fuel your body with stored fat. There's one thing to know about yourself, if you live in America you are addicted to carbs, sugars, and probably other food items/chemicals that you don't even know about. When my wife and I first started doing IF, it was MENTAL torture to not eat, and we thought it was just because we were hungry. No, it's not, it's because our bodies were going through withdrawals. After regularly doing this for over 5 years now, sure we feel hungry, it's natural, but the beginning was the worst part before we had acclimated our bodies.

If you're a female reading this, just know that my wife is right along side me doing the same protocol. You can't make excuses if you're not a guy, and no it doesn't affect her period. She's every 28 days on the dot.

Thanks for mansplaining this to us women. Nothing greater than a man with a thorough grasp of female hormones and reproductive cycles. Where did you attend medical school? Is your obgyn practice accepting new patients?

Lol. This response is why I tell people to just read Brad's book Eat Stop Eat.

I told you my wife follows the same protocol as I do.

Did people have refrigerators 200 years ago and prior? Preservatives in all their food so it could always me at the ready? Full meals available to eat every 3 to 5 hours? Some people might have come close to that in more civilized areas, but through history food has generally not always been at the ready. In essence people did fast more because of availability. Somehow civilization has continued to multiply despite all those females who didn't have the luxury of making excuses. I'm trying to be helpful and share our success story.

OP here. I appreciate your posts, thank you. I have a very highly calibrated mansplaining detector and I didnt' think your post came across that way. I am going to keep going for awhile longer on the 16:8 plan. I appreciate you explaining the timing for how you do your longer fasts. Can't quite go there yet, but it's good food for thought (no pun intended).

I thought it was a good explanation too but also very hilarious. Makes sense to me...it was hard to change the mindset of eating often but I think it does work. I’m not sure if I can do a fast as extreme as that but might change things up a bit as I said before.

I have a lot of girls and really try to protect what they see me doing and I like that with IF, they don’t see my dieting or focusing on calories or certain food groups. But that’s another subject.

OP here: I agree, I have a boy and a girl and both are very aware of weight, fitness, etc. (to my chagrin often), so I like that I'm eating real food when I sit down with them to eat. This is coming from someone who did two months of Isagenix (to my great shame).

I’ve been eating between 1pm -7pm on Tues and Thurs for 3 weeks. I am losing 1-2lb a week. I am working with a dietitian and I also cut out fried food and keep my added sugar under 24g a day. My dietitian thinks IF 2-3 days a week is appropriate for my desired 30-40lb weight loss. She only recommends daily for people with 75lb or more to lose

Mansplain PP here...

You certainly have a valid point, but fasting can help with balancing hormones, detoxing, ramping HGH production, and increasing white blood cell count. There any many positives to tell your kids about, so it doesn't get portrayed as an unhealthy lifestyle choice. When your body isn't focused every few hours on digesting a new meal, it can do some pretty amazing things for itself.

Ouch! Mansplain douchebag here... I'm trying to provide helpful advice through mine and my wife's experience with IF. It has been hugely beneficial and life changing for us, and I want to take every opportunity to answer questions and encourage people on this journey. Would it be better to just use words to describe how much muscle I have? Yeah, I work out every day and my wife tells me I'm sexy all the time and that I'm her favorite person in the world. I don't need validation of <faceless stranger> on the Internet, BUT I am happy to help <faceless stranger> on the internet with intermittent fasting questions. <Anonymous> asked a question and I was trying to be succinct. I should stop trying to help. Haters get me down.

NP (female). Thanks PP for the thorough posts. I have to agree that my experience is very similar to yours and your wife’s. 1-2 day fasts work so much better for me and actually helped regulate my periods and hormones. I found that drinking bone broth (Lono brand) helps tremendously when fasting.

Do you drink the broth on fasting days? That’s not breaking the fast?
