These threads about speed cameras are so tiring.
If you are against paying the fines then don't speed - it really is that simple. I hope they find the vandals and prosecute them - they certainly aren't heroes to any DC residents who want drivers to slow down and obey the damn law. Those that feel differently should move to DC and lobby the DC Council to eliminate the cameras or increase the speed limit. Otherwise you are guests in the city and should follow the rules as determined by the cities residents. |
You may not care about kids' safety, but I'll bet the majority of us does. |
So the one one I-295? How is it keeping kids safer? |
|
The comments tho. |
Some passengers are kids. Speeding endangers those around you. Cut it out and stop whining when you get ticketed. |
The one on 295 is absurd. And I say this as someone who generally doesn't have an issue with speed cameras. |
| I wish those people would vandalize cars who illegally stop and block streets. Hazard lights don't exempt you from following the law. Or maybe set cars on fire that do illegal turns over double yellow lines? |
| Big brother gets a black eye. |
They are like modern day Robbin Hoods. |
More like Al Qaeeda, IMO. |
| Easy to say "just don't speed." I drive like a cautious granny and even I got one of these tickets. Many of the DC roads have unusually low speed limits that can catch you offguard, especially when a comparable road in MD or VA will have a higher speed limit. I'm all for road safety, but let's be real, these cameras are for revenue; safety is secondary. |
But it's revenue for the camera companies, not even the city government. That's the real rub. City government gets so little of every ticket. I have a problem with speed cameras because I think it's an inherently governmental function (public safety) and that a company shouldn't be profiting off it. |
Do you have a citation on this, specific to DC? In DC the ticket payment system is run directly by the DC Government so not sure where/how an outside company is taking its cut. Also the cameras are deployed and managed entirely by MPD staff. |
It's strictly about revenue generation, not safety. DC has been caught repeatedly on this. Don't even bother arguing the "safety" bullshit. No one believes that. |
