This is BS. I have 2 kids with ADHD who did alternate testing for ADHD accommodations (small group and extended time) . Kid 1was offered admissions and attends. Kid 2 advanced to the semifinals and is up this year. If they were culling kids because they gave a 504 or IEP and need accommodations, they would be sued so fast their head would spin. TJ has a 15% admit rate. The 3 kids you know are not a representative sample. |

NP here but I'm guessing PP was talking about kids who wanted a makeup date because of another activity, such as the area band concert not because of accommodations.
I do agree that 3 kids does not a rule make. |
Geez, i pointed out small sampling and I was talking about kids who asked for alternate date because of activity conflicts not kids like yours who are being accommodated for SN. Take it for what it's worth but my kids were told by MS counselor to not ever request an alternate date unless they have a very, very good excuse. |
| I was told by a parent that a group of kids he knew took make up test and they were all admitted. different stories everywhere like in other threads. |
This is depressing. My DD is on the debate team, and they had prepared for the tournament for several months. Her coach (FCPS teacher) sent an email to the TJ admission office asking to let her take the test on 2/9 because he and the team needed her to participate in the debate tournament on 2/3. Does it mean she will not get into TJ now because of that?? She so much loves math and science and is so good at it. |
No, your DD will be fine. I know several kids who've been admitted after requesting the alternate date. In fact, I don't even think the evaluators of the essays know why the kid would've requested the alternate date. |
I'm the PP who knows a few kids denied admission. I think your DD will be fine especially if she has a letter from teacher that says her team needs her. Good luck to her! |
| My child asked band teacher for a recommendation because of first chair in school band and also has got several awards in local competitions. The teacher warned that although she was sure she'd written good recommendations these years, none of the kids who asked her were ever admitted. Well, my child asked her anyway. DC was first chair All-District band this year, so had to request the alternate test date. Now I am actually quite curious. Let's see how it goes... |
Thank you. If we think about that, the AAP, TJ, top colleges, top employers looking for the summer interns - all of them want to ensure that a student is active in and passionate about some extracurricular activity, in addition to having the best grades in school. It wouldn't be logical for TJ to deny admission specifically because of that - if a child had prepared for a concert/tournament for several months and requested an alternate test date because that concert/tournament was also scheduled for 2/3. The DD's debate coach even asked the tournament leadership to check the TJ test dates next time, before finalizing the tournament schedule for the year. |
| Kids are totally discussing the questions and the exact math questions were requested by the Prep centers soon after the test (i.e. They asked their students who took the test.) DC's friend and mother discussed the math question at a Super Bowl party yest eve!) |

Hey All,
We moved into this area after the deadlines for TJ applications were over. Does TJ consider applicants entering in their sophomore year ( entering in Grade 10)? |
Check TJ admission website. You may be able to catch the freshman summer round. |

Heads up on timing on admissions decisions. The TJ course registration master schedule, release to TJ parents through a link in a TJ today article, right now says that freshman preview night is 4/11 or 4/12 and riding academic advising starting 4/16. Which mean decision released 1st week of April— 3/30 or 4/6 (because relate is always a Friday evening). My bet is 4/6, because there is always a quick turnaround.

| question: why do they say before 4/30 when historically, the results have been released first week of april? |
They say no later than 4/30. And it gives them padding if something goes wrong. DS is class of 2020, and the SIS was rescheduled due to weather. Plus FCPS was closed for the 3feet of snow. They still got results out in early April, but if the second administration had also been snowed out, they would have needed the padding. Then there was the year computers malfunctioned, and they had to convert the SIS to take home. Etc. so they build in extra time. |
