Out of State Schools and Merit Aid

I assume PP meant 4.36 gpa for Pitt and not 3.36.

Someone looking at Pitt as an OOS option because stats are not high enough for UVA or UMD should know that Pitt likely won't give them merit. They are looking for all A's and very high test scores.

Yes, 4.36 WGPA. Here's a post from Pitt Admissions re: merit scholarships:

Rank is only applicable if it is provided. Merit based scholarships are very competitive and in most recent years have been awarded to students who rank within the top 5% of their class (if rank is provided) or have an A average in a challenging curriculum. It is hard to speak to the hypothetical you provided because there are a lot of factors the Scholarship Committee will consider in addition to rank when reviewing an applicant.

OP - apply widely. The cost of applications are a drop in the bucket when you consider overall cost. DD's 7 out of state acceptances (public) ranged from 0 merit aid to instate tuition. Not schools talked about here. We would never have been able to anticipate the results ahead of time, never.

Can you share which schools provided in-state tuition and your DC stats.

Back in the day, my Berkeley scholarship covered all OOS fees (which were considerable), and helped with room and board.

Would your mind sharing your child’s stats? And congrats!

GPA 4.4; top 5% of class; ACT score 32; URM with a unique non-school EC; attends a large urban high school
Pitt is a safety for my DC but this was way more generous than we thought and worth considering.

FSU has low OOS tuition (relatively speaking).

Didn't happen for us (merit aid at Purdue) but your situation may vary. DS also got into Ga TEch for aerospace engineering. Also no merit aid.

It only works for females.

Ah, well that explains it.

WVU mentioned here but is becoming more and more popular. Actually a lot of kids from up north like NJ.

Community Colkeges are economical also. WVU was last ranked #187 by US News, you can do better..

I believe that Ohio State and Delaware have fairly generous merit with fairly firm cutoffs, making it easier to predict what you're likely to get.

29/1350 and top 25% gets you $12,500 at Ohio State. 1500/33 and 4.0 gets up to $15,000 at Delaware, $11,000 for 1400/3.75.
