Oh good!! The beagle is joining two cats so that’s great to hear. And yes I think she is SO cute but I’m a little biased! |
| Separation anxiety is a concern for many rescue beagles, including the last two that I have had. You're lucky that you are starting with a puppy. Make sure to crate train the dog from the beginning and make sure he is comfortable being alone in his own space. Make him sleep in another room from you. |

Beagles are cute dogs. They are also highly untrainable and very food greedy. They are escape artists and they are very yowly.
Still, they love being around kids and they are very playful. |

What???? Congratulations on your beagle lovies! We've had three beagles and a beagle mix. They are wonderful dogs. Never, never let your beagle off the leash, particularly this time of year (Fall = hunting season) when smells and scents are so enticing. No matter how much your beagle loves you, and they will love you, they will follow their noses to the ends of the earth when they pick up a scent. We were clueless beagle rescue parents six years ago and I can't tell you how many times we chased our beagle, because we thought she would want to fetch and play, like a retriever, rather than wander and snuffle in the bushes and trees. Don't ever "free feed" beagles. They should get limited meals because they will stuff themselves until they vomit. If you are training them with treats (and they respond well to positive training and are fully trainable) take the treat ration out of their daily food so they don't pork up. Your beagle loves to roll in ANYTHING smelly. That includes the feces of any animal. Luckily, they are easy to throw in the shower and don't need grooming. Despite the stereotype, none of our beagles have ever been howlers, bayers, or heavy barkers. Perhaps that is because someone is always home at our house. Beagles require steady companionship. They are not meant to be alone and will develop anxiety and negative behaviors if you expect them to live crated/alone for your work day. NOT a good idea. They are such wonderful dogs, especially with kids, and so loving. |
Thank you so much - this is so helpful and thorough! I, too, am used to retriever-type dogs who are more loyal to their owner than surroundings, so this will certainly be an adjustment. However, from everything I’ve heard it’s hard to find a bigger love bug. Great advice on feeding; I’ll definitely have to put her on a schedule and probably do the same with the cats so their food isn’t around (even on a counter) to distract her.

Awww, beagles are so cute.
I have heard they are escape artists, because once they will follow a scent out the door, down the street, across the highway....so I'd recommend a gate or something that blocks the access to the door so you don't have to worry about him darting out. I highly recommend you read these free short ebooks by Ian Dunbar: Before and After You Get Your Puppy https://www.dogstardaily.com/files/BEFORE%20You%20Get%20Your%20Puppy.pdf https://www.dogstardaily.com/files/downloads/AFTER_You_Get_Your_Puppy.pdf I swear, every issue I had with my puppy (a lab, so easily trainable, but still) was addressed in here. Our puppy came home and slept through the night in her crate that very first week. |
| That puppy is so adorable op! I have a dachshund, but beagle was on our short list when we were looking at puppies. So cute! |

CUTE! Enjoy, OP!

Welcome to your beagle! Don't let him off the leash unless he is in your fenced yard. Be prepared for him to adore your kids. It's better to walk him with a harness than just a leash clipped to his collar because you don't want to pull too much on the neck.
If you have a kitchen trash can, make sure it has a lid that snaps closed. Best wishes! |

Beagles are GREAT dogs (as are all hound breeds, imo). They are so, so cute, sweet, silly, great with kids and other dogs (generally speaking).
They are very smart, as well, and as a result can be on the naughty side. And stubborn. The good news is they are VERY food motivated so keep lots of those itty bitty training treats handy and the dog will do anything you ask. One "downside" can be in some hounds (including my own beagle) is that they can have a high prey drive. Ours doesn't inside the house (such as with our cats) but outside she will chase and kill squirrels, chipmunks, and other animals. Mostly her stubby legs can't catch them but she has once or twice. Keep your sense of humor with a hound. They are so silly and so funny. I just love them to death and enjoy their goofiness. Have fun! |

PP here. Forgot to mention: they follow their noses. you need good recall training and NEVER let them off leash.
Ignore the "babies" warning poster. It's BS. All of my hounds LOVE kiddos, including babies. My DD was raised in a house of hounds and could do anything to those dogs and they just sat there. |
Wonderful animals but the bolded is true. |
| I've had beagles since I was 6 and absolutely love them. My current beagle my bf and I got a year into our relationship. Well, she just turned 9 and has been the best thing ever! I will say puppy training absolutely rocked our world. I was too young to remember what my parents dealt with when I got my childhood beagle. My current dog was a chewer, escape artist, and had a very difficult time learning to go outside. It didn't help that we got her in the winter. I wouldn't trade her for the world though. She's so sweet and a cuddle bug. I second people's comments about keeping beagles on a leash and invest in a sturdy trashcan with a lid that's difficult to remove. We ended up having to get a metallic one from Costco because she was knocking our plastic one over constantly. We also had her sleep in her crate the first two years downstairs. This was pre-kids and I will say it was torture listening to her whimper when she went in at night but she fell into a routine. She now sleeps on a dog bed in our room. |
