Congratulations on your beagle lovies!  We've had three beagles and a beagle mix.  They are wonderful dogs.

Never, never let your beagle off the leash, particularly this time of year (Fall = hunting season) when smells and scents are so enticing.  No matter how much your beagle loves you, and they will love you, they will follow their noses to the ends of the earth when they pick up a scent.  We were clueless beagle rescue parents six years ago and I can't tell you how many times we chased our beagle, because we thought she would want to fetch and play, like a retriever, rather than wander and snuffle in the bushes and trees.

[b]Don't ever "free feed" beagles.  They should get limited meals because they will stuff themselves until they vomit. [/b] If you are training them with treats (and they respond well to positive training and are fully trainable) take the treat ration out of their daily food so they don't pork up.

Your beagle loves to roll in ANYTHING smelly.  That includes the feces of any animal.  Luckily, they are easy to throw in the shower and don't need grooming.

Despite the stereotype, none of our beagles have ever been howlers, bayers, or heavy barkers.  Perhaps that is because someone is always home at our house.  Beagles require steady companionship.  They are not meant to be alone and will develop anxiety and negative behaviors if you expect them to live crated/alone for your work day.  NOT a good idea.

They are such wonderful dogs, especially with kids, and so loving.[/quote]
