New beagle puppy

Anonymous
So, we are getting a 10 week old rescue beagle/beagle mix (mom is confirmed beagle and not sure about the dad). I am both excited and terrified. Can anyone tell me about their beagle and especially tips for a very young puppy? I know they can be quite stubborn and not great on a leash. She’ll be going to obedience classes ASAP but beyond that I am not sure how to train. Thank you for any advice or suggestions!!

Love our beagle mix!!! Very smart dog.
Honestly we didn’t go anything special as far as training. She picked up house training quickly but she absolutely hates to go outside when it’s wet - and she’ll find a corner inside and pee. Ugh.

Glad to hear you love yours! I’m dying to know if/what she’s mixed with. I want to do one of those DNA panels.

Aw, mazel tov on the new puppy!

Some different trainers - and even some shelters - offer puppy kindergarten classes that'll probably be helpful if you're feeling a little intimidated.

Thank you so much! I am just over the moon to have such a new fun adventure coming our way. I did get some recommendations for puppy kindergarten from the shelter and will check these out as well.

I think you will find them helpful - plus you can meet other people with puppies, and meet up for playdates, while secretly knowing for certain you are the one with the best puppy of all. It's going to be so much fun.

But also, just don't get overwhelmed - they need food, water, love, walks, toys, and regular vet checkups. Say "no" in a consistent manner when you want them to stop doing something - while also being aware and tolerant that puppies can be little kooks who run around like madmen and will occasionally chew the wrong thing.

We had a beagle for 14 years (got her from the pound as a young adult). I agree with the PP who said they are very smart. Also devious and crafty- we had a large fenced-in yard, and she constantly escaped out of it. We had it reinforced/ buried deeper/ stakes strengthened... nothing stopped her. She also jumped on the dining table and ate a whole cake once.
Congrats on your new friend!

I'm 18:22. PS: our beagle LOVED kittens. We adopted three homeless/ abandoned kittens over the 13 years, and each time, the beagle adopted them as her own. Endless baths, nudging them toward the food, letting them sleep on her... very nurturing dog.
