Liberals will have a significant advantage in national and state elections indefinitely if there is mass amnesty. Hispanics can be counted on to vote about 60-70% for Democrats. They will presumably be loyal to the party that got them citizenship and/or legal status in America. Liberals can then use that electoral advantage to finally get single payer health care, a guaranteed minimum income, criminal justice reform, etc. Liberals might have to write off the South but they do not do well there anyway. Those states will continue to get punished as resources and services are first allocated to blue states. |
Maybe if the red states took responsibility and properly taxed at the state and local level, they could provide more services for their constituents the way blue states do? But instead, the wealthy of those states continue to ride on the backs of the poor of those states all while continuing the illusions of being rugged individuals who don't need Washington. Texas has no state income tax and is taking BILLIONS in relief for Harvey. How about Texas impost a temporary tax to pay the US Treasury back? |
This is how I feel about it too. I met an undocumented family years ago. The parents came here to leave a desperate situation back home and have taken terrible jobs (including poultry industry) to try to make ends meet. The dad has been sent home a few times. Their lives are very precarious. Despite all of their troubles they are very kind and very hard working. I have a great amount of sympathy for them even though I don't think they should have come here illegally. But they were in a bad situation - not sure what I would have done differently myself if I were in their shoes. The poultry factory where they work is terrible. They seem to be blatantly breaking the law and going unpunished. Plus the working conditions are terrible. Seems unjust that this family and others are being prosecuted but this company goes unscathed. |
Because there are horrible places to live that make getting here legally nearly impossible and I have sympathy for people who flee for their lives with very little.
I've always wondered why we couldn't get many of these people some type of refugee status. And then some path to citizenship. |
That would be the humane thing to do. |
The greatest trick the Koch brothers and the Chamber of Commerce have ever pulled was getting the left on their side for supporting illegal immigration to keep the labor market from getting too tight. They must laugh about it every day. |
Is the US the refuge for all people in the world who live in horrible places? Should we let in any and all people who flee from their country in search of safety, a job, a better way of life? |
You should just ask the Kochs and the GOP elite This question. The biggest supporters of illegal labor are wealthy Republican business owners. In a move of pure genius, the rich Republcans have got their low income/low information republican base to blame the democrats for hiring all the illegals.
Fortunately for the GOP elite, their cultural base has the critical thinking skills of a lamp post. Ah ye SUCKERS! |
Yes, we should let in people fleeing horror. You should try facing horror someday. It might change your mind. |
Good question. We do have limited resources so obviously we can't help ALL. But we can't just close our doors and help none. Cutting the number of legal refugees is pretty sh1tty, too. Thanks, DJT. |
We DON’T close our doors and help none. Promoting this lie is not helping. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/01/30/key-facts-about-refugees-to-the-u-s/ |
Trump IS reducing the number of refugees we save. You are promoting the lie. |
Agree with both PPs. A woman who used to care for a neighbor's daughter was here illegally and she fled her home country after her entire immediate family, including a younger brother, was killed by gang warfare. She came to the US as a 17 year old girl - no family at home and only a distant relative in the DC area. People like this woman are fleeing terror at home and while I don't think entering the country illegally is okay, now that she's here she should be treated humanely and with a path to citizenship. She is hardworking, two jobs (both menial but nevertheless she works them) and she has taught herself English. |
Yes, voting for trump at the very least means that white supremacy, misogyny, bullying of the disabled and sexual assault are not deal breakers for you.
Which makes you a sympathizer. Sorry Not sorry if the truth hurts, honey. |
And, we are still allowing refugees in. |
