TTC at 45

I got pregnant accidentally at 42, gave birth at 43. I was super embarrassed at my OBGYN's that I was so old but he told me that I was of average age of the women he sees. So clearly, some women are getting pregnant after 45!

I had my IUD (paraguard - non hormonal) removed yesterday.

Op,

You have two children and I assume healthy? I think you should ask yourself why after 9 years of being without a baby you want to go back to that stage. Are you trying to avoid something? I have cousins who kept having babies to avoid having to deal with big kids. Big kids talk back and babies are so sweet and innocent ( and love you unconditionally) Not saying you are doing this but, it is something to consider.

I don't mean to be harsh but, your kids are at great ages to travel and do things. I don't understand why you want to rock the boat when you have a perfectly fine family!

Really? How do you know the ages of the women PPs OB sees?

The pregnant women over 45 have used donor eggs.

Really? Have you asked all of them?

Look, I had two kids over 40, my last at 44. I even got pregnant again at 46, and had a miscarriage. I spent years on ttc boards for older women. I was an exception and I know it. Pregnancies at 40, 41, even 42 happen on a semi-regular basis. Then there are the handful at 43 and 44. By 45, it's rare and incredibly unusual. By that point, anyone who has been ttc and really wants to carry a child will turn to donor eggs. I don't doubt that pp's Doctor sees a good number of women 45+ who are pregnant, but trust me, they used donor eggs.

This, plus he may have been using "average" to mean "typical," not a mathematical average.

I did five rounds of IVF to get my DC at 42, then got pregnant naturally at 45 and had DC 2 at 46. Very unusual I think but all worked out great. I know how lucky I am.

Did she have her last period at 55?

There is an article that compared curves for 1) when women had their last child like 200 years ago 2) when women enter menopause today.

the curves are identical but shifted 10 years. It seems that fertility end 10 years before menopause. You don't know when you will enter it obviously but it seems to be strongly related to mother/sister.

you don't really know about those other women though. TTC crowd is small and well versed in donor eggs. Not women don't know what that is. Most women giving birth - or aborting (which is actually a bigger group) - at age 45+ have their own children and probably have not even heard of donor eggs.

Don't listen to this for one second! My mom had me naturally at 42 and my little brother completely naturally (and quite unexpectedly!) at 47 after 20 years of unsuccessful attempts. Docs had been leading them astray over what time of the month to try and conceive, although who knows what other factors went into that- sometimes it's a complete mystery. My mom and I are incredibly close and we all had an amazing childhood. My parents just got back from zip lining in Costa Rica. They are SO much less fragile seeming and much more adventous about life than most of their friends. Couldn't have asked for better parents!
