What can I watch on HBO during maternity leave

If you've never watched the Wire, you really should. Not light and easy, but arguably the best TV ever made.

Also, Westworld, Rome, and the Leftovers (in that order) were good and haven't been mentioned already.

I loved this, too!

And since no one has mentioned The Sopranos - if you haven't seen it, you really should. Just as exceptionsl as The Wire and a lot easier to follow on too little sleep.

NP. Westworld and Rome are super violent. Also, I had to eventually stop watching the Sopranos because it got too violent/awful for me.

More my speed:

Veep
Silicon Valley
Entourage
Sex and the City
Big Love
Empire Falls
Show Me A Hero
John Adams

Girls. You will be amazed at how awful they are but very entertained in the process. It's comedy and you're supposed to be laughing at them.

Big Little Lies. Amazing from start to finish.

The Night Of. Also Amazing. Powerful. So good. Riz - that's all I have to say.

Westworld. So different from anything else i've seen this year and it really captured my imagination. I just wanted to understand the world. It's very violent but also beautiful in a strange way.

Divorce. It's a cold show - it takes place upstate NY in winter. It's worth watching for SJP's skirt wardrobe and to feel superior to the awful marriage of these two a-holes.

Silicone Valley or Crashing. Hilarious nerd humor. Both are good, but Silicone Valley is better.

The Wire
Veep
Sex and the City
True Blood (it did get weird later on)
True Detective (first season)
Six Feet Under
Girls
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Newsroom
The Night Of
John Adams
Big Love

If you're looking for the most mindless (I watched a lot of HGTV on maternity leave), then I'd skip The Wire and John Adams.

I loved John Adams!

Silicon Valley is fun and funny.

Angry Boys
Ja'mie: Private School Girl
Jonah from Tonga (2014)

They are mindless and a good veg-out (no brainwork) option.

OMG, yes!! I've only seen Ja'mie: Private School Girl, but I was dying throughout.

"The Leftovers" gets my vote. Such a beautifully strange, unique, and clever show. Not very happy, but so so good.

"Veep" for some huge belly laughs.

And "Big Little Liars" - truly excellent.

PP here. Let me clarify that I think The Wire is the finest television show ever made. I also enjoyed John Adams. However, they're not light and fluffy shows, and when I was on maternity leave I needed to be spoon fed TV. I tried watching House of Cards and basically cried because I couldn't understand it. Of course, I also cried because postpartum hormones are a bitch. If you don't watch The Wire now, do it once you're sleeping through the night again. It will hit you differently as a parent, especially the school season.

Really? Can I ask you how long it took you to get into it? My husband and I watched probably half of the first season and then we kind of gave up. I've loved every other HBO show, so this was really surprising to me. We don't watch much TV (we usually do one show at a time and watch maybe a couple of episodes a week), but usually we get sucked in and then it's something to look forward to. This show felt like something we needed to do and then finally we just stopped. I really wanted to like it though!

PP here. My husband had the same reaction as you, but I was hooked from the beginning. It was so bizarre and utterly unlike anything I had ever seen; yet it was also beautifully conceived, acted, and written. I found every episode so shocking and unexpected and was just thoroughly intrigued. My mom was also a huge fan, and we had many intense conversations about it! Probably one of my favorite shows ever.

I couldn't get into it either, and I can't say that for too many shows. I really wanted to like it!

I sued to watch Sex and the City when nursing - watch one episode, change boobs, watch another episode.

I feel like all HBO has been mentioned so just another one - if you have Netflix, watch Schitt's Creek. So damned funny.

I'm impressed that you can watch Call the Midwife on mat leave. I watched some while a new mother and I was a hot freaking mess.

But did you watch Summer Heights High?
