Sleepaway camp: Top or bottom bunk for 10 yr old girl

Anonymous
My kids have bunks assigned to them. The camp my kids attend knows my DS does better with a bottom bunk and my DD could care less (they answer questions on a form well before camp). So, in a way they get to let their choice known well before camp starts (and the camp really tries to accommodate all the kids). I have never had a say in this (they have to sleep there, not me).

It IS actually helpful to tell your daughter, "You can make your own decision," sometimes and this is one of those times. I say that to my girl all the time. She needs to be able to make decisions and deal with it when she makes what she finds out later was the "wrong" decision.

Maybe her kid wants to make an informed decision. People are being extra weird here. OP - As a kid I liked the top bunk because when people came in to hang out, they wouldn't be sitting on my bed. Plus I'd get claustrophobic otherwise. Bottom bunk was like being in a cave.

This is one of the many reasons you send your kid to camp, so they can make their own choices are see the consequences of them (good or bad). Remove yourself from this equation. My son always picks the bottom bunk. Not my choice but it works for him.

Some kids really like that cave aspect. I like it, but I don't like noisy people in the top bunk -- it was always a dilemma!

Also, does your DD have a twin bed at home? I had a double growing up, and my first year at camp (I was 10) I rolled right off the top bunk in the middle of the night. I had a big black eye the next day to show for it, too! hahaha. Every year someone would roll off the bunks....no one got hurt that I recall but it might be a deterrent for your DD.

I still chose the top every year so it didn't deter me much. The top is fun!

Seriously. What's with all the PPs who are lecturing? Maybe OPs daughter will be more comfortable/less anxious if she can imagine her space at camp. OP doesn't have experience so threw it out here as a question. She's not saying she's going to hide under her kid's bed to make sure everything is fine. Jeez.

OP, I had bunk beds with my brother when we were younger, and too was more desirable for us (so we took turns every few months). I don't know if camp is different.

Uh, weren't there railings? I've never seen a top bunk without a railing.

My daughter thinks that top bunk might be further away from the bugs. I pointed out that the spider webs might be closer to the ceiling.

Top bunk is good because there's no chance there might be a bedwetter above you. Top bunk is bad because it's a pain to get up and down in the middle of the night (to pee or whatever) and every time you move, it moves and creaks.

NP here & there were no railings on the top bunks at the camp I attended as a child. Fwiw, I don't recall any of my bunkmates ever rolling off their beds.

Agreed. How is this a topic that requires "input"?

Yeah, there were no railings or I wouldn't have fallen off the damn thing. Not all bunk beds have railings. The ones at my camp looked like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/vintage-photo-MEN-LAYING-IN-BUNK-BED-1950s-/391378362671?hash=item5b1ff7e12f

This was in the mid-90s too so not that long ago.

I was surprised too. I actually was glad someone posted it, until I read the responses, but I saw a few helpful nuggets in the weeds.

This. When she asks you which you think is better, you turn it around to her. "What do you think? Can you think of any pros and cons for the top? For the bottom? Why don't you talk to these other kids lining up for the bus. Maybe they've been top camp before."

FWIW I loved top when younger and bottom when older.
