Sleepaway camp: Top or bottom bunk for 10 yr old girl

Anonymous
First year taking 10 yr old daughter to sleep away camp. Please tell me the pros and cons of DD picking the top bunk and the pros and cons of DD picking the bottom bunk. I never did sleepaway camps where bunks were used and always had my own room. I have no experience with them but also assume some of the issues would be particular to sleeping in them at camp as opposed to a room in the house. Would love your input.

Just let her pick ffs.

Well the first thing is that sleep away camp is that it fosters independence. Your DD should work this out with her bunkmates. And it might involve some negotiating, ie you get the top bunk by the bathroom or the bottom bunk mid room. Or the camp may just assign beds. In either case, let your DD handle this.

Did someone tell you she gets to decide this? At my camp, it was first-come-first served. At some camps they don't even have bunk beds.

Anyway, bottom bunk is easier access, less annoying for midnight bathroom trips, more likely to be the bunk where friends visit. Top bunk has a "cool" factor, and is quieter, since no one is creaking around on top of you.

Bottom bunk generally gets to claim any floor space, too, under/in front/beside the bed, unless the camp assigns that for trunks and such.

At my camp, there was nothing allowed on the floor - so we could sweep and keep the place clean. Otherwise this description is correct. I always found the bottom claustrophobic.

At my kids camp all bunks were assigned. No free choice.

I wouldn't get invested in this. If she's a first time camper, it's likely she won't have a choice.

Not sure which is better but I am very sure you should have no say in it whatsoever.

Whichever one she wants if it's available. And if she makes the wrong decision she should deal with it. Damn, talk about micro-managing.

I am imagining a woman wearing a sun visor and fanny pack with water tucked into the belt, with her capris and Keens wandering around wooded campgrounds holding her cell phone up to find service so she can post this question and screeching "Madison wait! I'm waiting for the answers to roll in so we know what to do!"

And they may make her switch halfway through, since young kids generally want the top bunks.

these things were figured out on day 1 when we arrived, amongst ourselves

It's first come first served and she asked me so I asked on here. Thank you to the posters who acrtually gave me a helpful response to offer my child.

Thank you. I shared this with her.

This was also helpful, thank you.

It IS actually helpful to tell your daughter, "You can make your own decision," sometimes and this is one of those times. I say that to my girl all the time. She needs to be able to make decisions and deal with it when she makes what she finds out later was the "wrong" decision.
