No way. When they do two weeks, it still always ends on January 1st with us coming back January 2nd (unless that's a weekend). It's the start date of the break that varies. I'd predict a break start of no later than 12/19 with a good possibility of them making 12/14 the last day before break. Considering that the break this year starts stupid early (12/15 last day of school before break) I wouldn't be surprised if thist trend continues since no one seems to have made the connection between these excessively long breaks and our late June dismissal.

Instead of rolling your eyes, how about you look at an actual calendar. We're getting a full 2-week winter break, plus Mon, Jan 1 AND school is finished on June 15, 2018. This FCPS employee and parent LOVES the 2-week break in December.

Parent here - most people I know hate the two week break in December. I guess that's the difference between SAH and WOH parents.

Hey, dumbass, we're only getting out earlier because we're starting earlier.

The previous poster is entirely correct. The FCPS school calendar is bloated beyond belief with holidays, teacher workdays, and worthless half days.

The main issue I have with all these half days and days off is that students can't get into a routine for their classes. Band practice can be cut weeks at a time. You throw in snow days too and the calendar really can get out of whack in the winter.

Not looking like much in the way of snow days to worry about. Hope I'm wrong.

Anyone know if FCPS plans on another pre-labor day start for the 2018-19 year?

Yes. They won't move it back now that they got approval to shift it before labor day.

I'm the OP here but I just saw this question. I'm sure you don't really care at this point, but I can't buy the tickets 18 months in advance yet. I am trying to decide whether to take an international trip to visit family summer 2018 or winter break 2018. Winter break is my first choice theoretically but it depends on the school vacation. I could theoretically buy the tix for a summer trip now, if winter break is out.

But I still don't think the draft 2018-2019 calendar is out yet...

Anyone know how long the approval is good for? Is it good for forever, or do we still have to meet the criteria to use it?

Have to meet a set of criteria over 10 years:

http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/pre-labor-day_waiver/index.shtml

The Board of Education may waive the first day
students attend school begins after Labor Day
requirement based on one of the “good cause” options
of Section 22.1-79.1 of the Code of Virginia: Being
closed an average of eight days per year during any
five of the last 10 years because of severe weather
conditions, energy shortages, power failures, or other
emergency situations

"All school divisions must certify annually that they meet one of the criteria above for a pre-Labor Day opening waiver or that they will not open prior to Labor Day." I could see us not meeting the criteria in the future ... just saying.

Currently we have it through the '19-'20 school year at minimum. That means the school board has the option of starting before Labor Day, but they don't have to do so.

Does anyone know when school will start in August 2018?

It may or may not start in August 2018. I think next year's calendar will be set late this winter (February or so).

Well, Labor Day 2018 is on Sept 3rd. If they have approval to open before Labor Day for the next two years, as someone mentions above, the guess would be Monday, August 27.
