Lake Barcroft - Annandale Next big thing?

Anonymous
It will inevitably come up because its nova and no one is making any more of it. But it's generally aesthetically ugly and not well located. Along with Springfield, Burke, Reston, and Centreville, it's an option when there are no better options.

It's inside the beltway and has some great housing stock, including the MCM heaven that is Lake Barcroft. It seems like it has to be an investor's dream. Why is it not the next South Arlington?

We just sold our starter house here, and are looking for something bigger in the "better" FCPS school districts (Burke, West Springfield, etc) but I kinda love it here and would really prefer to spend our $740 on this beauty:

rather than some boring Mcmansion that's going to add 30+ minutes to my SO's commute.

But it's hard to get past a GS score of 2, even if you don't buy into the reductive self fulfilling prophecy of Great Schools.
Can someone give me hope? Any reason to think Annandale schools will are going to get better?

MCM is already passe and it never caught on in the DC area, where colonials were never dislodged as king.

Mason Crest is "like" 44% Hispanic, not 65%. You send your kids there and don't know this?

How nice for your children that you want them to have brown people around to give them diversity.

Buy it and send your kids to a parochial school.

We live in a great neighborhood, beautiful home, schools not so hot due to proximity of a low income area 2 miles away. We are barely outside the beltway, so it's a good commute downtown. Also have 3 kids. It was cheaper for us to foot the bill for parochialx3 and we are happy with the education, class size and size of the school.

Granted our home won't appreciate as fast as other areas. But we decided we were ok with that bc we didn't want to move far out or buy something smaller, closer in or with a dysfunctional floor plan. We all make compromises.

Beautiful home! We'd definitely buy it if I were a SAHM. Only reason our family considers good schools mandatory is that we voth work and have very little time to supplement their education. If i were at home, I'd simply work with my kids to make sure they were intellectually getting what they need. I really believe that education starts at home and if parents are vigilant and involved, then kids can do well anywhere.

My only reservation regarding high farms schools are all the social problems that accompany low income. Tough to combat the peer group the kids are exposed to, except possibly via sports and extra curriculars.

If it were the next South Arlington, I guess that would mean the SAT scores of the high schools would go down.

Op, I grew up in Annandale late 80s and 90s and went to St. Michael school.
If I didn't work in DC would live off Old Columbia Pike and send kids to St. Michaels.

What goes up must come down (except for the SAT scores at Wakefield, which never seem to go up very much).

Wow, thanks for bringing up Wakefield. Have you seen the new school? GORGEOUS. Wakefield also has a beautiful new indoor pool and amazing new outdoor tracks and fields. Bet you can't say that about your "perfect" Fairfax County School - especially since all of your teachers are leaving for abutting counties that (get this) actually pay a living wage.

APS should have expanded the capacity at its schools, not built a few trophy schools like Wakefield where the student performance actually dropped after the students moved into the new building. It's not even at the TC Williams level now, much less the level of every school in FCPS besides Mount Vernon. You couldn't pay me to send my kid there, and it's only going to get worse with more overcrowding and affordable housing units planned for South Arlington.
Anonymous
Keep dreaming, and maybe one day TC Williams will crawl it's way to a GS 3...
What's it now? Oh that's right, a 2. Same as last year and the year before that. I don't know what's more pathetic, that rating or threads here speculating that Alexandria will build another high school for only the rich white kids.

You are right, APS should have made Wakefield bigger, because it's where all the millenials are crowding now.

The millenials have make their choice, and it isn't TC. Sorry about your bad luck and property values.
