What do you spend on your average weeklong vacation?

Anonymous
Beach week $3000
Florida trip $6000 (we get a suite with a kitchen)

I think base is about $250 per person per day (we have one at home and then invite our adult 'kids' at least one week, often two weeks per year so it is kind of who is coming rather than x# per trip. Some years flights are on points, hotels may be if its a weekend trip but we usually rent houses by week.

For us...
Average US trip with flights involved $4-6k

More expensive US trip: $7-10k

More than 10k would be really expensive for us. That's almost our budget for the whole year.

Maybe this isn't what you're asking for, but a lot of people are getting nearly free trips because of stuff like that.

This. I max out my credit card rewards. So over the last 2 years we have done weeklong vacations to Japan, South Africa, Caribbean, etc. All of these trips had either free airfare or free hotel.

Agree. We've done 2 trips to Europe in the last 18 months with free airfare. One trip west to ski with free airfare. Also used nearly $2000 of hotel gift cards on one vacation. I only pay for airfare if it's under $300 or at Christmas when I invariably haven't booked early enough to get a saver fare.

Agree. People really need to read up more on hotel/airline credit card bonuses and use those points wisely. Tons of free flights and hotel nights out there if you do your homework. Of course, if one or both of the adults in the household travel frequently for work, you should hardly ever be paying for flights or hotels if you are strategic about your vacation plans.

Exactly. Which is why "an average weeklong trip to Europe, Asia, Africa, Caribbean" etc can be, for so many, pretty standard.

If you're taking "average weeklong" trips to Europe or Africa, the question is probably irrelevant.

What? No one goes to Europe or Africa for a week? Ever?

I wouldn't consider an average vacation to be one to Europe or Africa. That's not average. If it is for you, I don't think the cost is relevant. Understand?

NP here. You don't sound very creative. I recently got $500 tickets to Europe. The trip ended up much cheaper than the driving trip that we had been planning. Just because you can't figure out how to do it doesn't mean that no one can.

Would someone please elaborate on the points being mentioned here? Are they credit card points? Any recommendations for cards, especially if you don't travel often?

do a search for best travel rewards cards.

but PPs are ignoring the point that you can just get cash back from certain credit cards instead of travel points and use it for whatever you want (whether it be a trip or a 529).

usually less than 2k for 2 people. we like to get off-the-beaten-path, which tends to be cheaper.

I don't ignore it. But because I travel a lot for work I have a United card that gives me a lot of points for regular purchases, and more for United purchases. One business class ticket to Europe and I have a free trip to Europe between the purchase points and the flight points. Because we travel a lot as a family I can use the miles for pretty high priced tickets, which is more valuable to me than the cash back cards. Others may not have the same cost/benefit.

3.5K isn't crazy. We spend around $2K for a week at the beach (drive) and more like $3-4K if we fly somewhere. We alternate beach vacation with something bigger/requires flights.
Anonymous
We typically spend a week at a Florida beach for spring break, family of 4.

$1000 flights
$1500 condo rental
$300 rental car
$500 food and activities

So, $3300. Add $1200 or so if the trip is to Disney (to pay for the park tickets.)

If we rent a beach house in summer within driving distance its usually $1500-$2500 depending on if we are splitting it with others or not.

We haven't branched out much with travel since having kids. We usually just hit the easy button.
Anonymous
We just did a week in the Caribbean for 4.

Airfare ~$1600
Hotel ~$2000
Food ~$1000
Uber ~$150
Activities ~$500

NP here. You sound kinda mean. Putting aside the airfare (as we have - literally - more than a million miles in one account alone), just food in Europe is extremely expensive. I'm not talking about eating out at high end restaurants. Gas is very expensive there if you're renting a car and if not, then your transportation budget (subways, trains, additional airfare, etc.) is quite high. Try looking beyond your snark and holier than thou attitude!
