DH is a frequent traveler, so we go for free on points and miles. We budget $200 a day for food and activity (usually less) for a European or S. American trip. The hotel and airfare are free. Maybe this isn't what you're asking for, but a lot of people are getting nearly free trips because of stuff like that.
This. I max out my credit card rewards. So over the last 2 years we have done weeklong vacations to Japan, South Africa, Caribbean, etc. All of these trips had either free airfare or free hotel.
Agree. We've done 2 trips to Europe in the last 18 months with free airfare. One trip west to ski with free airfare. Also used nearly $2000 of hotel gift cards on one vacation. I only pay for airfare if it's under $300 or at Christmas when I invariably haven't booked early enough to get a saver fare.
Agree. People really need to read up more on hotel/airline credit card bonuses and use those points wisely. Tons of free flights and hotel nights out there if you do your homework. Of course, if one or both of the adults in the household travel frequently for work, you should hardly ever be paying for flights or hotels if you are strategic about your vacation plans.
