40 year old men who ride bikes... in packs.

-1 I live in Western Europe and the unfortunate phenomenon of entitled male cyclists can be seen here, as well.

Seriously this. They look so completely foolish. It doesn't anger me - I just feel embarrassed for them when I see them. Do these men (and some women too) really not understand how silly they look?

+2

I was a cyclist for years in my twenties - it was my sole means of transportation - and I never wore that sh*t.

That's it, I'm buying my husband a swimming unitard to wear to our neighborhood pool this summer.

There are not many parts of the world where cyclists can ride 20mph on an non-congested 45 mph street while slowing up all the traffic behind...

Or on paved trails that were not designed to handle these men playing tour de france dressup. There are in fact speed limits and laws about yielding to pedestrians, which these d-bags routinely ignore.

Wow, so much negativity against cyclists. 50-something rider here (runner too). Biking has kept me in great shape over the years (I weigh the same I did in high school and eat like a pig). I do my very best to obey the rules of the road, although I can't say the same for many drivers. The difference is, if the driver messes up, the cyclist is severely injured or dead. To those of you who think the cycling unis are ridiculous, try sitting on a bike seat for 3 or 4 hours without bike shorts and see how your ass feels. Finally, the cycling packs can be obnoxious at times, but that certainly doesn't apply to all of them. On the other hand, bad drivers tend to always be bad drivers.

-not a cyclist

Oh I'm sorry, PP. Do runners invade highways and other roads designed for cars breaking traffic laws on a whim. Also, runners rarely run in packs. Most runners take a more libertarian approach to exercise. Bikers are the communitarians of exercise junkies.

I just read an article that says marathon races result in reduced capacity for emergency responses for areas near the race.

Riding a bike is fun! Way more fun than running (I've done both)

I'm not a rider but my 50 something uncle is. He dresses the part. The tight bike pants are padded, which is why her wears them. He bikes for hours. The last time I biked for hours I ended up at my gynecologist. They also don't chafe the way baggier pants would. He also wears the jersey thing with the pockets on the back to hold water bottles and stuff.

I can't address the pack thing, but for my uncle it is a very social activity, as running is for my cousin who almost always runs in a pack.

The problem is not so much with the sport or the activity. I don't really begrudge anyone that has an exercise routine that they enjoy and can stick to. The problem is that this activity is ill-suited to a major metropolitan area. I feel for you guys but just like I can't play street hockey on Connecticut Avenue a peloton whipping through DC just doesn't work. PS, Beach drive on the weekends is not your personal tour de france stage.
