Wow, so much negativity against cyclists. 50-something rider here (runner too). Biking has kept me in great shape over the years (I weigh the same I did in high school and eat like a pig). I do my very best to obey the rules of the road, although I can't say the same for many drivers. The difference is, if the driver messes up, the cyclist is severely injured or dead. To those of you who think the cycling unis are ridiculous, try sitting on a bike seat for 3 or 4 hours without bike shorts and see how your ass feels. Finally, the cycling packs can be obnoxious at times, but that certainly doesn't apply to all of them. On the other hand, bad drivers tend to always be bad drivers.
I'm not a rider but my 50 something uncle is. He dresses the part. The tight bike pants are padded, which is why her wears them. He bikes for hours. The last time I biked for hours I ended up at my gynecologist. They also don't chafe the way baggier pants would. He also wears the jersey thing with the pockets on the back to hold water bottles and stuff. I can't address the pack thing, but for my uncle it is a very social activity, as running is for my cousin who almost always runs in a pack.
