| Is it a valid concern? I don't think that the Salvadoran gangs are especially interested in DCUM Larlas and Larlos. |
What in the world?? Of course it's a valid concern! Where did you grow up? How naive are you?? Another poster who doesn't give a rats a$$ as long as her own kids aren't targeted. SMH Gang violence often takes innocent lives. And the lives of the Salvadoran ES-aged (ES!!) kids are somehow worth less? |
I think what this poster was trying to say is that you shouldn't be afraid to send your affluent non-Salvadoran child to school out of fear she will be recruited by a gang. I didn't read this as a statement that no one cares about innocent lives. |

Some of you PPs are phenomenal in your ignorance.
We are at a FOCUS school in Silver Spring and there is absolutely a gang presence in the cluster. We have had a representative from the MCPD come out and talk about it in community meetings. My SIL teaches in Gaithersburg, and it is absolutely an issuea that can affect ALL the kids - not *just* the Salvadoran kids. Do you think gangs only target non-affluent victims? What about businesses in the area? Ugh, either you PPs are completely naive or just have no f'in clue about how crime affects the communities around you. It's not just about being recruited by a gang PP. |
Again, no. Nope. Sorry. Both of you PPs (and the others) sound completely out of touch. Must be nice to live in that bubble of privilege. Do you think gang issues only affect poor, immigrant kids? First off, even if they do then it's still reason to be concerned. But, they do not. Gang issues affect the whole county. My friend owns a business in Rockville. They've had a few incidences of theft over the past 2 years. The police seem to think it's related to gang activity. They steal these items from various stores around the county (that my friend is in business selling) and resell online as a source of income. They don't just stick to Gaithersburg/Silver Spring. They *gasp* even go to wealthier areas, to find even better 'products' to sell online. So, gang activity in one part of the county should be a concern for everyone in the county. Saying that you're not afraid to send your 'affluent' kids to school so OP shouldn't be concerned, is pretty short-sighted, IMO. |

How do you define a "gang" in MCPS though? Seriously?
A group of kids who hang out on their motorbikes, smoke and wear red bandanas? Its not like there is a gun problem or a knife problem, or a major drug dealing problem. THAT kind of gang doesn't get to MCPS or if it tried, it would be dissipated through expulsions, surely. |
| We are moving to the Whitman cluster. Nice schools, no gangs. |
What? What??! Not quite how hit works in MCPS. I'd love to hear from some teachers who teach in schools where this is an issue. Any input from people who have some insight? |
| There are no problems in Silver Spring schools. None. Anybody who says otherwise will be shouted down by the Silver Spring boosters on this board. |
Sorry in this instance it's Gaithersburg. But the same knee jerk defense applies with respect to all non-W MoCo schools. |
I hear your concern. Unfortunately all the attention to this also fuels the white flight panic. Maybe we can find a way to fight gang activity while not freaking everyone out and segregating the schools even further as people run for the hills. |
Yup. It's the difference between "we should all be concerned about gang activity because it's really bad for the victims of gang activity" and "I only care about gang activity insofar as there might be a gang member in school with my child". |
Yes, the Whitman cluster has different social problems. |
| What does mcps do withhtgeir student gang nembers? Can they expel the gang members or send them to alternative school where they will be isolated, watched closely, and educated? |
| When child refugees and illegal aliens are coming into our country, gangs become their family. |
