Why are so many people suddenly talking on speakerphone in public places?

FaceTime.

My mom does this and it drives me nuts. Every phone call is on speaker phone.

When she visits, she sits outside smoking and making loud phone calls via speaker phone.

Sorry, neighbors.

Talking on your phone in public is rude. At the gym, on the metro, at the grocery store, wherever. A quick "hi we're calling to confirm your appointment" is fine, but conversations? Not ok in public ever, even without speakerphone. Have your long conversations in private.

oh, sorry, that's only the woman in the office across the hall from mine. Shut your damn door you loser. I do not want to know why your SIL was arrested over Thanksgiving. (WTF?!)

I do! Details! For something like embezzlement interesting or more like she was dealing at her son's preschool interesting?

Agree OP. It's incredibly annoying not only to hear stupid one-sided conversations but two-sided.

umm...your weird. Nothing wrong with having a conversation. Do you whisper to your friends when you're out in public together? God forbid people hear your conversation then! Oh wait, it's not over the phone so it's not rude in that case...riiight.

Not at all the same. Speakerphone is actually better than just hearing someone talk on the phone - one-way "conversations" are grating to listen to.

I don't think you understand. PP is saying speakerphone conversations are rude in public and should be done behind closed doors. That is silly, and no different than talking to someone in person.

Guilty of this specially when my mom Facetimes me. She has no idea whether I'm at a grocery store or home. And that's one call I can't ever ignore, no matter where I am.

I do this sometime when I have a call that can't wait - the earspeaker on my phone has gone bad and I can't always dig out my earphones in time so speaker phone it it.

OMG! I haven't noticed the talking on speakerphone, but the watching videos without a headset. And not like 20 second videos... like watching your own damn Netflix in the doctor's office waiting room. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?

It is totally different. Unless you have a lot of conversations with imaginary friends, providing both voices.

Some people don't want to hold the phone near their ears for fear of brain cancer.

My husband does it at home. I told him not only is it rude but he doesn't tell the person he's talking to they are on speaker phone. When it's business I leave the room. When it's his family I yell he's making me do things I don't want to do.

Suddenly? This has been going on for like 15 years.
