Why are so many people suddenly talking on speakerphone in public places?

These people must be following me. I have been at the doctors office, target, and other places and there are people talking on speakerphone. I am ready to lose my sh_t. I don't want to hear your annoying conversation. Can't I just wait or shop in peace.

It is usually African American women? I've found they often do this. I've noticed it especially at the doctors office. They also watch videos without a headset.

I see this more with young white women (early 30s) and often when they are shopping. Can't stand to be untethered for a moment, I guess.

I'm still trying to figure out why people feel the need to have inane conversations on their cell phones in public at all, much less on a speakerphone where I am subjected to both ends of the stupid conversation.

The blame reality tv. Those people are always using speaker phone.

I think a lot of them have shitty sound quality on their phones, and they can't hear properly without it on speaker. And then the rest of them are just copying what they saw someone else doing.

+1 that's what I was assuming as well. Every HGTV show, entertainment reality show, MTV show, whatever has characters having dramatic conversations on speaker phone.

I do it when I don't want to hold the phone to my ear (using 2 hands to do something else while still holding my phone, pick something up...etc).

Well, that's only so the cameras can pick it up, so that WE can hear when we watch. Unless these random people in public have cameras following them, nobody wants to hear or cares about your call. They have no excuse.
