Yes, you do take your hat off.

Actually, only men are asked to remove hats/caps.

The point of the Olympics in YOUR mind may be to win a medal for the US, but maybe for the Olympian it is just to go as far as they can in their sport, or to see where they rank in relation to the others at the top of their sport.

I get that its America and they can do whatever they want blah blah but when they are representing their country on something they worked so very hard to achieve? Finish it off and put your hand over your heart and sing! You deserve this!

I suppose it's better to put your hand over your heart and look bored out of your mind?

Deserve what? If it's for the athlete's benefit that they're on top of the podium being recognized, shouldn't they respond in whatever way makes them most comfortable?

I saw the story with Gabby and the national anthem reported initially and didn't think anything of it. Overreaction, I thought but after barely clapping for her teammates last night, it seems like this might be part of a bigger attitude issue for Gabby. I feel like her behavior has less to do with disrespecting the US and more to do with just being pissed, she's not the "star".

I'm sure it sucks not be chosen for the AA competition. I'm sure it sucks sitting in the audience when 4 years ago, you were the one winning gold. I can cut her some slack because I'm sure she's under a tremendous amount of pressure and I understand why she would feel that way, but it's still poor form.

Gabby Douglas seems off this Olympics.

They panned over to the 3 other team members when Simone won. Laurie ans Madison were jumoing up and down screaming and cheering. Gabby was just sitting there and half heartedly clapping.

I hate to say sour grapes, but she definitely appears to have her mind someplace else.

She might have more going on than we know about.

You know whose Olympic behavior was really inspiring? Fiji's rugby team. Amazing.

I thought Gabby was fine. I'm a little tired of Michael Phelps wagging his finger at other competitors - he is one of a kind, but that's not very sportsmanlike.

Of course, you don't have to but there is a protocol on how to act, stand, behave, etc...

My favorite American so far on the podium is the other Simone. She made me tear up.

My 8 year old kept saying "She just made history! We got to see someone make history!"

My middle schooler stayed up to see the gymnastics awards, then piped in with "Today is a really great day to be an african american girl named Simone."

Yesterday was my favorite Olympic day so far. I hooe Simone the swimmer gets the Wheaties box. She was amazing.

The etiquette is spelled out in Title 36 Subtitle 1, Para. 301 of the US Code:

(a)Designation.—The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.
(b)Conduct During Playing.—During a rendition of the national anthem—
(1) when the flag is displayed—

(A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;

(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and

(C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and

(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

But they don't have to. That's what makes America great, please don't forget that. It is what makes us better, ironically.

+1. Land of the free!

In 2012, she was the all around gold medalist. This Olympics, she has not been as successful. That is difficult for a competitive person. Perfectly natural disappointment.
