Weird mother-in-law

Anonymous
Why call it false? My friends new husband walked into his IL's house and shook her father's hand then sat down at his computer and went through his checking and saving accounts. True story. She was mortified. He claimed he wanted to check on their welfare since they were getting older. Might have pulled that BS off if security didn't show up hours later because several residents reported he tried to come into their homes and walked around their yards even after they asked him to leave. Believe me there are some people who just do not believe your right to privacy trump their whims.

She checking out how much you spending her son's money.

I actually work my ass off as well...

Is your MIL Indian? I am Indian and several of my older and otherwise normal female relatives behave like this.

Thought of that! But we were at my BIL house and my nieces found a dancing pole in their bedroom. Of course they told this to my MIL. She called every single person and told that her DIL has it in her bedroom. So the toys in the closet not an option!

So she tells everyone that she finds sex toys in your closet- why would that be embarrassing for you? It is your closet, she has to admit to everyone she is digging around in YOUR closet to out you for having things that are private in your private space? IMO it makes her look far worse...

No, this is not normal.

Because one time I said something and she started crying saying:"I thought we are family!".
Husband got upset and told me to be kind with her.

Protecting a reasonable amount of your privacy is not unkind. She is being unkind by being intrusive. You can tell her, "yes, of course we are family, but even family members have their privacy." Stop her from doing this. If you need to put a lock on your closet door, do it.

Your response to that guilt trip is "We ARE family. And family respects other family's boundaries. I would NEVER think to go into your bedroom, let alone your closet. Being family doesn't mean we go through each other's things." Get a skeleton and put it right inside your closet where she'll see it when she opens the door so she takes the hint.

Anonymous wrote:MIL is very obsessed with my clothes and my closet. Every time she comes over she goes to my closet and checks for new items. Then asking me questions like" when did I buy this?" or "how much did you pay?" or "did my son get it for you??"
One time she grabbed my new bag on public and exclaimed:"When did you get this??" After that started to check everything in it and found a new wallet, opened my wallet, checked all my credit cards etc.
Is this normal? In my family we always had this rule to not get into private things, my mom would never check my purse or pockets etc.

Total weirdo. Def just say "Don't touch my stuff, ever." then move on to the next topic.

No idea WTF her problem is.

My MIL comes and goes through every cabinet and drawer on the whole main level, "to see what I can use, cook and eat while I'm here."
And then FIL goes through everything in the whole house, including utility room, supply room, garage, attic, around the yard, "to see what I can fix, while I'm here." Only when they stay things break non-stop because of his ADD playing around with everything - washing machine, garage opener, grill, fence, light switch. You name it, he'll break it.

Who knows what MIL goes through while we're both at work.

God, if only this worked with my in-laws. If a door is closed, that's the first place they go.

I'd have to leave out affair material with in-laws like this. You know- random hotel receipts, love notes addressed other men's names.

My MIL is annoying in that she always goes overboard complimentary and then wants to know how much it was or where we got it. Very annoying.
