Why is 5th grade waitlist up so much this year for Charter Schools?

Anonymous
Hardy only offered 25 seats this year as opposed to 80 in SY15-16. Maybe families looking to Hardy for a soft landing are realizing that window is gradually closing.

Stuart Hobson only offered 8 seats for 6th

very few seats offered for 5th grade for anything feeding Deal and Hardy. Can count on a single hand the total offered to feeders for either school. Puts a greater squeeze on charter 5th grade options if families can't get a spot at an ES feeding a desirable MS

Murch remodel had some 4th grade parents looking at options to avoid a year of trailers on the UDC campus.

And Watkins offered none for 5th grade. Maybe due to swing space, but only offered 2 last year for 5th

I hate to say it, but DCPS incremental progress is reflected in the increased charter applications. Not all ECE or MS options are desirable, but enough of them are sought out or acceptable that it's getting harder to gain sought after OOB spaces. That's at least partially driving increased charter applications, even though there are additional factors (immersion, Montessori, rigorous curriculum, etc)

This is the tipping point that DCPS ihas been waiting for -- new charter growth has been curtailed, in large part due to facilities challenges. DCPS is gambling that these motivated families who are shut out of charters and the traditionally stronger DCPS options will finally decide to enroll at EH, Brookland, CHEC, Cardozo, MacFarland and so forth in next couple years..

Not yet. Maybe most of that class of 40 applied to a charter school but not to avoid Eliot Hine. The majority of that class is in boundary for Stuart Hobson by virtue of SWS having been an inboundary part of the Capitol Hill Cluster School when these families joined. Some since moved, some were admitted OOB, some have siblings in a Charter but most have Stuart Hobson as a back up. That's why you haven't heard a peep since their official feed became Eliot Hine

That's exactly right. But will they?

MacFarland has a waitlist for its new dual-language program. PP's hunch might right.

Where are you seeing that data? Is DCPS wait list information out?

It's not public yet. Enrollment is what really counts though.

It seems like there might be 500 more rising 5th graders this year than last year based on 13-14 audited enrollment results - http://osse.dc.gov/publication/sy-2013-14-general-education-enrollment-audit-data-and-overview

In 13-14 school year, this year's rising 5th graders would have been in 2nd grade (5990 2nd graders and 5453 3rd graders in 13-14).

Does anybody know where to find more recent audited enrollment results by grade?
