Why is 5th grade waitlist up so much this year for Charter Schools?

The 5th grade waitlist is up 165% from last year according to the latest data for Charter schools.

Does anyone know why demand is up so much for specifically 5th graders? Are there much much less seats available this year causing more than a doubling of the waitlist?

BASIS offered fewer seats but not sure how many less.

More people are hanging in with public elementary schools into 4th.

Even the less engaged parents (the poors) have caught onto the little trick of getting into an HRCS middle school.

Who told them?!?

Now we'll have to come out with other subtle barriers to entry.

More people realizing the only chance to get into Latin is in 5th? The waitlist for Latin is around 100 students longer.

Maybe some Oyster parents want to move, since they no longer have access to Deal. Some parents in SW are looking for new feeder path now that Wilson is off the table. I know some DCI feeder parents who are having doubts that DCI is a good fit for their kids.

Also School Within a School has a 4th grade of around 40 kids this year and Eliot-Hine is a big dead end for those families.

And doesn't Brent have three fourth grade classes instead of two?

More charter elementary seats have been added in last few years relative to MS seats.

DCPS still hasn't solved its MS issues. Hardy left a lot of OOB on its wait list last year.

Basis offered 95th grade spots in this year's lottery, last year it appears they offered 170. So that is a pretty significant decrease. Does anyone have insight why they did that?

90 not 95th. Sorry. Using the voice thing on my phone.

Because they need to back on 5th grade admits until they know how many in the current 8th grade stay for 9th. Current 8th grade is their largest to date.

9th is a big transition year in DC as there are more solid high school options.

HOLD back on 5th - (I'm on my phone too)

Latin WL has been much longer in past. Last year my DD was something like 140. Her sister drew #53 this year which sounds like she won't be getting in either?

Wow, that is a massive difference! So BASIS offered almost 50% fewer seats this year than last year. Although not the only reason for the overall massive increase in the waitlist, it is a big driver of it.

Last year Hardy offered 80 seats in the lottery for 6th. This year it's only 25.
