Going rate for teen shoveling?

PP here. I suppose the sliding scale would work. You could say (when pressed): well, we would usually charge (whatever amount here), but whatever you are comfortable giving.

Neighborhood teens don't usually charge the elderly or informed, IME.

We don't want to overcharge. Several are elderly or retired neighbors. But I don't want him to undercharge either. It is a lot of snow and will be a lot more work than a normal snowstorm.

What do you all think of $10.00 per 6" of snow? Our neighborhood has primarily single car driveways.

Don't charge the elderly. Yankee here. They might offer the teens something, it is up to the teens if they accept it, maybe after complete insistence. The teens should only shovel as many driveways as they can.

Normally I would agree with this but in a couple of cases there might be an element of "pride" involved if the elderly are insisting on paying. For example, if a neighbor man usually did all his own lawnwork and then suddenly hit a point where he couldn't. I know my FIL had a hard time accepting that part of aging and hiring the neighborhood teens for things like shoveling and lawn mowing helped him to keep his pride at losing his physical ablilty to be entirely self sufficient. He saw that as giving a kid his first job vs charity from tue neighborhood kid because he was too old/frail to do it on his own anymore.

It seems like this might be a similar case, so I would be okay with the teen getting paid.

Elderly widow on a fixed income though? Free neighborly help and life lesson for the kid.

Wow, money grab. I am glad I do not live in your neighborhood. We have one elderly woman on our block and everyone pitches in to shovel for her. No one would ever accept pay as we'd hope someone would do it for us.

For illegals?!?!?!?!? I think some people consider them human beings, maybe not in the suburb hellscape where you live. I hope your power goes out tonight.

Judge much?

There is one elderly couple who insists upon paying and who hire out neighborhood kids for various yard chores. They enjoy helping teach kids how to give a hard days work for fair pay and consider it part of their role in the neighborhood. My kid shoveled the widow's driveway every single snowstorm last year by himself for free. She wants to give him something "fair" this year for this storm and asked him to come up with a rate

The others are retired couples, empty nesters. No shame in accepting a fair wage for what will be very hard labor.

Your post did not really contribute to this discussion as it is not what was being asked.

Thanks.

This is helpful.

i have no problems asking the elderly to pay for a hard days work either. They can enjoy the social security that we are paying into (with very little hope of ever getting a payout back) and in return they can start paying their fair share for things. If one of them refuses to pay my kid tomorrow, I'll go and demand the money.

I would ask my kids to do it for free, as I help our neighbors when they are in need, but understand if your kid doesn't want to (no judgment here). What would your $10 per 6" come to about?

Its not an option for my kid. I teach him the right thing to do and set the example. He's out with dad doing ours and hers right now. He knows he cannot accept money or mom will make him return it (just as I was raise). He has everything he needs and does not need the money.

It depends on the amount of snow. If we get the max they are predicting, he would top out at $50.00. But that three feet would require at least three passes throughout the day to clear it. He did our driveway and sidewalk tonight and it took about an hour for just around four inches. Based on how longit takes to do our driveway, I think it would come to between $5.00 to $8.00/hour, which seems like a fair rate for a younger teen.

He will probably charge the elderly lady that he did for free all last year around $20.00.

The only other driveway he did for pay last year was for the big 10" snow and they paid him $40.00.

And if I were in my 60s and asked to hire a neighbor kid for lawn service, snow removal, dog waking or whatever, I would insist upon paying to help teach tue child the value of hard work, and honest work for honest pay.

OP here.

Not sure if you read my post but my kid DOES do the elderly lady's for free and did all last year (and the little snow we had this week). She insists upon paying him for this snow.

The other elderly couple's husband approached him with a "business proposition", man to man, to hire him.

The other folks would pay someone either way, whether it is my kid or a lawn service. They are not elderly, infirm, or in need.

What does being an illegal alien have to do with being a human being?
