Janney third grade parents--what do you think of the giant class sizes?

32 kids is waaay too many even if you have two "teachers".

Does DCPS pay for these extra teachers? Are they fully licensed?

Janney needs to stop riding on their test scores and improve the actual environment.

It's only 4 more than many MCPS classes that have only 1 teacher.

It is probably necessary and inevitable that the boundaries get redrawn but good luck with that - when DCPS proposed this as a teaser two years ago the handful of impacted folks went bonkers.

Also there is nothing particularly logical about using Wisconsin as the dividing line - there is a good chunk of the southwest corner of the Janney population that is actually closer to Mann than Janney and yeah a slice of the northeastern most territory is closer to Murch but the excess IB seats are at Hearst which is very close geographically to both Murch and Janney.

and people avoid moco for this very reason. That does not mean it is a good idea to have 32 kids in a class.

Not sure what classroom noise or this alleged concussion has to do with it though - 2 teachers ought to be better able to control a classroom than one.

What are the details on this concussion incident - your post is the first I've heard of it.

The concussion happened within the past few days.

And do you have details on what happened and whether it had anything to do with the 3rd grade classroom model? I can easily see how my child might get a concussion on the playground or maybe in PE but a concussion typically requires a serious blow to the head and I'm having a hard time figuring how that may have happened in a classroom.

Also we are pretty socially dialed in so I find it hard to believe we haven't heard about this already so I hope you are not making things up to stir the pot?

It was inflicted by one child against another in the classroom. The injured child was moved to another class for the remainder of the year.

I think you need to adjust your "social dial".

I know and agree. But just saying it could be worse!

Inflicted how? With a baseball bat? You did say a concussion and not a hangnail? Until I hear about this from a source other than DCUM I'm going to remain a skeptic.

maybe they could do an addition to add just a couple more classrooms for these years with extra kids? Build up?

Wow I had no idea, but if I was faced with this I would be calling downtown.

I had heard a rumor that Janney cannot have trailers, due to space used for the gardens and chicken coop. While some people think this is a great thing, a 32-person mega class due to lack of classroom space appears to be the result.

Would be better to have a trailer for the extra class-- or, as others have said, cut PK4, which is optional anyway AND most of the families in the Janney catchment area can afford private PK.

you need to go to pick-up today, put up your social antennae and the story will come to you. But first, be sure to take down your "anti-Janney comments" defense shield.

Or you could just ask your 3rd grader. Most of them know all about it. A child was stuffed into a cubby by another child in the middle of the instructional day and suffered a head injury and concussion.

What about a few trailers? Not to be snarky, but my kids are at Murch and there are full grades in trailers. I was skeptical at first but my oldest's 4th grade went great and 5th grade is also going strong, the fact that the classroom is in a trailer is not affecting the kids at all. It sure beat having 32 kids in a class IMO. my kids' classes at Murch have ranged so far between 16 to about 22-23max. Only one year one child was in a class of 25 (with one teacher and one full time aide) and it was the worst year, the number of kids really affected my child's experience in a negative manner. I think Janney parents should lobby with the school to have the 3rd grade rearranged and one more class should be created. as for the poster suggesting that the borders should be redrawn and Murch get part of Janney's boundary, I hope you are joking, Murch is already crowded and about to undergo a two year full renovation, really no need to get extra kids.

This is awful. What were the consequences for the perpetrator? I am an Janney family and have not heard about this.

Thank you for reminding me why I am glad not to live in NW. Trying and convicting a third grader in absentia on the Internet! Have some class, ladies. If you have an issue with Janney organize privately.
