Okay - as an American who lived in London for a few years, let me just say this to all you pointing out how stupid this gift was. MY DVD PLAYER I BOUGHT IN THE UK PLAYED BOTH US AND EUROPEAN DVDS!! Is it really that incomprehensible that Gordon Brown - the PRIME MINISTER - also spent the extra $100 and bought one that plays both? And though he would probably never admit to this, you can easily break the code to DVD players so that they play all DVDs regardless of the region. |
So... just out of curiosity, *is* there a Special Olympics Bowling team? How good are they? |
Maybe they should challenge Obama to a contest? |
I know Obama feels like an ass...I am a 33 year women who sometimes says things are "retarded."
That is retarded of me. |
No, it's nu-cu-ler. Dodged another bullet with Sarah "International Specialist" Palin who said it the same way. |
You missed my point. I expected Bush to make stupid comments. I certainly didn't expect this of Obama. Remember how Hillary was slammed when she made the comment about staying at home and making cookies? I bet she really feels that way. And by Obama casually making this remark about Special Olympics, even though he did not want to offend, it was still said and it made me shiver. Public officials need to be careful of what they say. I have a friend with a special needs child who participates in the Special Olympics so Obama's comment was especially grating. I thought he was above this. |
Everyone says dumb things once in a while, but seriously if McCain or Palin or Bush said such a thing, the media would play it over and over and over again. There is a big difference in how someone pronounces (or mispronounces) a word and then there is just careless and kinda mean comments.
I am sure he regrets that remark...but come on! And the DVDs make him look like a rookie...you don't greet our biggest ally that way. |
Obama's small gaffe is not a big deal except to those who don't like him and are looking for any small slip-up to bolster their case. Much as all the Bush-haters did over the last eight years. To me, the larger issue is whether it is appropriate for the sitting President (whomever s/he might be) to be a guest on a late-night talk show, period. I felt the same way about Clinton playing sax on Letterman. It lacks a certain gravitas ... |
I agree. When I heard about his plans to go on that show, I was disappointed. Same is true for People Magazine and so on. |
Obama's small gaffe is a big deal to me, a very liberal and loyal supporter of his who has a special needs child. He likened his ineptitude at bowling to a Special Olympics particpant/athlete.
Jsteele -- I agree he has many important problems to tackle - two wars and the economy. The importance of this effort I think goes without saying, but you said it to make an obvious point?... He was insensitive and offensive, not simply politically incorrect, and I do hold him at a high standard because he is my President and I voted for him. If one of one of his kids had Down Syndrome, I highly doubt he'd be so flip. |
pp, I am an African American woman. I almost NEVER go a week without someone saying something to me that is offensive WRT race. I NEVER let them know how I felt about the comment.
All of the folks criticizing the comment should take a look at themselves and ask how often they hurt (deeply) the person in the next cubicle. |
pp:
well, (a) maybe you SHOULD let them know, call them out! (b) each week, I'm guessing the person wasn't on Leno, and the person wasn't your elected President who should know better. |
I think at the rate Obama is going he is going to be our very own Special Olympics President. |
pp:that's pretty horrible. wow. |
(a) is easier said than done. (b) yes, you are right. That is why Leno is no platform for a President. |
