Bruce Jenner - A teachable moment

Well, it's better than Brucette or Brucina or Brucley.

As vapid and disgusting as the kardashians are, I applaud what Bruce Jenner is doing. The more we see transgender issues playing out in the spotlight, the more normalized it can be in our society. That's a GOOD thing.

Think about when I Love Lucy was on tv; back then it was taboo to even say the word "pregnant" on television. Now, of course, it's beyond normal. Same for interracial and gay couples. These people were, at one point, completely marginalized in pop culture and in society. They still face discrimination and judgment, but it's no longer abnormal to see them on tv, and it's no longer startling to see them at the store or park or family reunion or wherever. Over time it has become normalized and acceptance in pop culture is a major part of that.

It is too weird. And he fathered 6 kids and had 4 step-kids. Even more weird.

That was one of the most hilariously judgmental, ironic, un-self-aware posts I've ever seen. (And I don't just Bruce -- except for his association with Kris -- at all. I'm very pro-trans. I figure it takes a lot of courage to do that and they must really feel they need to.)

Should read "I don't *judge* Bruce" not "just".

Totally see this as a teachable moment. The suicide rate for transgender people is very, very high. They are very often victims of violent crime. Their transition regardless of when (or if) it is made, is very difficult. They deserve our acceptance and need our support.

I Hope Bruce Jenner finds peace in her decision.

Is it awful that I wonder if this is just another publicity stunt? I mean, I'm 99% sure it's not - but that clan is the worst bunch of fame whores ever. It just gives me an uneasy feeling for that reason.

I too am skeptical that this is a pr stunt for a new venture. These people stop at nothing to remain in the public eye

No. It's incredibly abnormal. He can call himself what he wants but surgery doesn't change his DNA. He's a man with serious mental problems and he has my sympathy, just like Chastity Bono does.

Isn't it a question about whether all of his strong doses of fem hormones distracted him and caused that crash on the Pacific Coast Highway? If Brucey-linda were responsible for my relative's death, you'd bet I'd judge him/her/whatever.

So, what do you think of the transgender kids that have been profiled on today this week? One was 5.

I wanted to be a puppy when I was 5. Honestly. My parents laugh when they remind me. Should they have allowed me to change my species?

Look, it's terrible when people really feel they were born the "wrong" gender, but that should be treated by a mental health professional. Not celebrated as "brave." I feel very bad for them but cheering when they butcher themselves is out of control.

You are a very hateful person. What difference does it make to you? You don't want to "butcher" yourself? Don't. Simple. But shut up about other people whose experiences you clearly know nothing about. Open your ears to other people's experiences and maybe you'll learn something. Wait, no. Open your heart.

PP, you and others like you can only come up with "hateful" when people disagree with you. Do you insist everyone who doesn't agree with you on everything is "hateful"? Because this is something we see so often with those with more liberal viewpoints. No surprise to me, for that reason.
