Would you be willing to give a dairy formula if baby was allergic tk soy and you didn't make enough milk? |
I'm pretty sure that vegan mothers would support breastfeeding - and probably extended breastfeeding at that. There are vegan families who raise healthy kids. The problem is that you have to be VERY careful balancing the diet or there will significant deficiencies causing malnutrition. There are websites and books that will show you how to do this but nuts and beans alone as the main proteins will not provide the nutrients that are easily accessed by eating meat, eggs, and dairy. |
I have an old friend who is vegan and even she makes sure her kids get dairy and eggs. Kids need rich proteins that plant material does not easily provide. |
The vegan diet DOES NOT give humans everything they need to thrive. You are severely misguided if you think raising an infant vegan isn't child abuse. |
Yeah, because newborn babies are chowing down on all of that stuff. |
Jains aren't typically vegan as they take dairy. |
It does not change the fact that human milk is NOT vegan. |
I was raised vegetarian and have many friends who were as well. We are all happy, healthy adults. Meat and eggs are not necessary for human health.
We see Dr. Fusner in Kensington and have had no issues around our diet. I've found the whole practice to be very supportive. I'm not sure if she's taking new patients though. Good luck OP! Good luck! |
Humans have the capacity to consent to the use of their milk. Breastmilk isn't comparable to other animal products. |
Dr. Fusner's practice has sent notice that the practice is closing, but there's rumor of the practice being bought. Be sure to ask appropriate questions. |
NP here. How can breastmilk not be vegan? If the mother is vegan (although I assume she is taking some supplements), then how can her breastmilk not be vegan? What is the logic? |
Cows eat vegan. So then isn't cow's milk vegan? |
Veganism doesn't mean "from mammal". Here is a definition from the https://www.vegansociety.com/try-vegan/definition-veganism
A mother feeding her baby is not exploitative. |
Cows are also vegans, but their milk isn't considered vegan. I think that most vegans are fine with breastmilk, but that doesn't make breastmilk vegan, it just means that most vegans make an exception for breastmilk. I think a vegan infant on breastmilk can thrive. I think that if a baby isn't able to breastfeed a vegan diet is not safe for an infant. |
I agree that there is a profound difference between providing breast milk to a baby vs. drinking cow's milk. However the argument that a vegan mother produces vegan breast milk is quite silly. "Where's the logic" indeed? Most vegans that I've known feed their young kids a less strict vegetarian diet. And nursed them as infants. |
