Is breastmilk vegan?
No. Breastmilk is NOT vegan and it has nothing to do with what the mother eats! Humans are mammals and breast milk is the milk from a mammal. That makes it absolutely NOT vegan.
Most vegans take issue with something coming from another animal like milk or an egg even if unfertilized. Yes, humans are mammals, but most vegans wouldn't be opposed to animals feeding their own young.
It does not change the fact that human milk is NOT vegan.
Humans have the capacity to consent to the use of their milk. Breastmilk isn't comparable to other animal products.
NP here. How can breastmilk not be vegan? If the mother is vegan (although I assume she is taking some supplements), then how can her breastmilk not be vegan? What is the logic?
Cows are also vegans, but their milk isn't considered vegan. I think that most vegans are fine with breastmilk, but that doesn't make breastmilk vegan, it just means that most vegans make an exception for breastmilk. I think a vegan infant on breastmilk can thrive. I think that if a baby isn't able to breastfeed a vegan diet is not safe for an infant.
