motion education at dynamite

LISS was a huge funding stream for them. There are some private pay but they are extremely expensive for no degrees and just nice folks doing a good job. I suspect many fewer families got LISS and instead of adapting their fees, they changed the model to insurance based but then they need licensed providers which most of the old staff were not. It would be ashamed is DOv and some of the folks left as they were the core of the program and built it to what it is. We ended up leaving when our LISS ran out so I am just speculating that LISS is an issue.

Just b/c you didn't get LISS money this time around doesn't mean other people weren't paying for Motion Education through LISS. This correlation doesn't make any sense.

A lot of their funding was Liss. There are some private pay. Some people did get Liss but a lot fewer than years prior.

No, not a lot less people, but a new new people have been getting LISS. In fact, recreational and therapeutic for LISS has stayed the same or increased (see page 23):
http://www.md-council.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/LISS-Report-Dec-2013-FINAL.pdf

The budget for LISS has been steadily decreasing over the last six years (as pretty much any social services spending). So LISS probably isn't having quite the impact you imagine at ME, rather it's probably overarching negative changes at Dynatmite.

I'm guessing something internal happened. Very very disappointed.

I was private pay for gymnastics and happily paid $75/week out-of-pocket for a 45 minute session.

Now I pay $260/week for 60 minutes with 1.5 instructors, for which insurance reimburses $100. Sadly, unsustainable.

My child will be devastated when I cancel.

Try for liss. Doubt you will get it, but it may be worth trying depending on the diagnosis. You are under the new model which they are hiring licensed its and pts and charging even more than. You can ask to switch to some of the non licensed people and it should cost half that but they are just athletic guys who enjoy what they do with no licenses. That is an insane price for 60 minutes. I forget how much we paid. But, it was not nearly that much.

This report is from 2013. The changes started in July 2014 that changed it to a lottery vs. first come, first serve, limit the funding to $2000 where it was $3000, and have twice yearly lotterys (money is split in half). The overall amount may have stayed the same but there has also been a greater demand as more people know about it. They also put in other limits which do not impact us but will many such as you cannot receive liss if you are on other programs.

I confess I don't know what LISS is, though I gather it's a MD benefit of some kind. I live in DC.

I don't understand the pricing, even with a licensed PT. It seems to be twice the rate of a licensed PT anywhere else.

For what it's worth, the PT (Donna) seems fantastic and also quite lovely. I definitely feel like a great program just got much better, were it not for the price....

LISS is grant money through the state of Maryland via the DDA to pay for "extras" for special needs kids. It pay for things like Motion Education, therapies not covered by insurance, and many other things.

I think it is supply and demand. They built up a nice business, realized there was a good market and need, expanded it by going the insurance route model and assumed families would be hooked into their program and continue to pay the extra costs. It is a good program, but they have made it unaffordable and out of reach for a lot of families I know. Several families I know have left and have no plans to return. Our insurance will not pay for them so it wasn't even an option for us. Either they have enough families that can pay, they will have to modify their fees or they will go under.

I'm in the same boat as you. If I don't end up getting any LISS funding, I may have to cancel my child's ME classes.
My LO will not be happy.

I thought my child would be upset when we stopped it but we went on to other activities and he adjusted just fine and surprisingly never asks for it. We did it for a few years.

I think something happened internally since most of the staff left. Could be money, lack of organization, poor comm , etc. etc.. I guess we will see what ultimately happens.

So, to add insult to injury, whereas two of my kids have been going at the same time each Saturday, I've just been informed that they can no longer be seen at the same time: only back-to-back.

So now I'm supposed to hang out an extra 30 minutes in that HORRIBLY overcrowded waiting room with an autistic kid each and every week, all for an EXTRA $245 per week, per child.

Insanity. And so sad for my kids.
