Should students be permitted to use WiFI in schools? --------- Will they be on their phones 24/7!

| My youngest is in middle school. Last year his school decided to relax the rules and allow smart phones in class. So far they have seen a decrease in kids texting and playing on phones. The kids use them for research, for keeping track of homework, and as calculators, but have been very good about appropriate use. I think kids tend to do better with increased responsibility. |

"Dr. David Carpenter, the director of the Institute for Health and the Environment University at Albany, New York has spent several years reading research on radio-frequency exposure and has testified to Congress on the subject. He says he is very wary of cell phones.
“My personal sense is that the evidence for increases in cancer is quite strong. It’s not one hundred percent, but most studies have shown that [people with] high exposures have elevations in leukemia, brain cancers [and] some other kinds of cancers.” He predicts that cancer rates will go up in the coming decades. “Latency for brain cancer is 20 to 30 years. Cell phones haven’t been around for all that long. I think it’s likely that we’ll see an increase in cases over the next years,” Carpenter says. |

Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy, a form of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, which can be absorbed by tissues closest to where the phone is held. The amount of radiofrequency energy a cell phone user is exposed to depends on the technology of the phone, the distance between the phone’s antenna and the user, the extent and type of use, and the user’s distance from cell phone towers. Studies thus far have not shown a consistent link between cell phone use and cancers of the brain, nerves, or other tissues of the head or neck. More research is needed because cell phone technology and how people use cell phones have been changing rapidly. |

Lord you sound like an old fart. 
If you think that opening WiFi in schools will change your kids' behaviors for the better or worse, you really need to be more realistic. This is not just about cell phones. its about tablet use and laptop use. most high schoolers use these technologies in school - opening WiFi only makes sense. |

More progressive and higher performing schools system allow and some even require students to bring their devices into the classroom.
It puts kids in MCPS at a competitive disadvantage if they are restricted from using tools that benefit note taking, access to materials, and modern information. We need to stop holding them back. For the life of me, I just don't understand this anti-intellectualism trend in Montgomery County Public Schools. This type of low standards, teach to the bottom, not allow enhanced technology is very tea party-esque yet this is a liberal county. Doesn't make sense. |

| I am not really opposed to smart phones in school, but please describe how they are used in class. Teacher is teaching kids are researching the topic while the lecture is going on? I know I am old but I just have trouble picturing it. I have heard kids just take pictures of the board rather than taking notes. I am not sure that is a great way to learn..though it does save effort. |

My son was just telling me about the group project he's working on in his 9th grade science class. There are 3 kids per group. He lucked out and was put in a group where the other two kids spend the whole class period on their phones on social media or texting. |

| By having laptops available when they are needed (for research or paper writing), it seems you can avoid many of the distractions and still let the kids benefit from technology. |
