Am I expecting too much from therapy for anxiety?

Remember that you can speak with any potential therapist by phone before scheduling an initial appointment, in order to assess potential fit. In this case you could ask for concrete examples of how the therapist helps clients apply CBT techniques to manage their anxiety.

Mindfulness meditation, tapping, EMDR ..... There is a lot more than Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

As someone who has (and sometimes still does) suffer from anxiety and who has finally found a good therapist I think you definitely need to find someone new. That is simply not helpful advice and it sounds more like something a well meaning friend would say than an experienced professional who understands anxiety.

The ONLY therapy that is going to really help you with anxiety is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT - anyhting else...forget it. Well, maybe Hypno Therapy as well. But that's it. Find someone who specializes in CBT and in treating anxiety...don't just go to any therapist.

Stefanie Consolla uses CBT and specializes in anxiety and trauma. OP, if you're in Montgomery county, definitely check her out.

Or try neurofeedback. I started it last year for anxiety and depression as a last-ditch effort before going on meds and it is a MIRACLE. I do not say that lightly. But after the very first session I was aware of my mind following different thought patterns- I'd think of something that would normally get stuck in my head for hours, and then a minute later I was thinking about something completely different. I am sleeping now, no chest pains, I'm laughing and dancing with the kids- it's amazing!

Try the Capital Institute for Cognitive Therapy. I can personally vouch for their work. Therapists are all very well trained in CBT as well as other interventions for anxiety. Here's their website:

PP again. Just wanted to caution that they aren't in network with any insurance, but if you have out of network benefits you can submit their bills for partial reimbursment. They are expensive but worth it.

I'd recommend Fernando Tripodi in Friendship Heights/DuPont.

Not the OP, but what kind of therapist offers this treatment?

A friend recommended EMDR to me, but unfortunately the therapist she went to passed away. Can you recommend anyone in the area who practices EMDR ?
