We are sending ours to a private in Fort Washington |
Greenbelt Elementary is fantastic. They have a new principal and she swiftly got rid of all the poor teachers and replaced them with excellent educators. The staff goes above and beyond. The added bonus is living in Old Greenbelt. You know all of your neighbors, by name, and there is a real community. |
Is your child in a private school now? Or do you homeschool? We live in Cheverly and have sent our kids to several PG public schools. They've all been great but none of them are ever going to be a Maret or a Sidwell. |
Yes, and that's true of public schools in general, not specific to PG... |
We live in Bowie and sent our child to the local community school for the first year. It didn't work out. With class sizes, no teacher assistants, and having a shy child, it resulted in much frustration on our part and lukewarm results for our child. I was scared to go private, but with funding from the school (I didn't think we'd get any let alone as much as we did), our child is going to private school next year. We couldn't be happier! ![]() |
Are you doing private in MD or DC? |
We're doing private in MD. Logistically, it will work out better, but I'm very impressed with the school's philosophy as well as their proven track record. We have a few friends who have children there and they couldn't be happier. |
Do you mind saying where? I just am not familiar w/the private schools in MD, & honestly, I do want diversity. Doesn't seem to be much in PG. |

Not at all. Our child is headed to Holy Trinity Episcopal Day School in Bowie. They are the only independent school in Prince George's Co. There some diversity, but not much, but that's somewhat the nature of the county. If you're looking for private schools in MD with more diversity, have you given any thought to private schools in Annapolis? I believe The Key School and St. Ann's bus children from a commuter lot in Bowie to the schools in Annapolis. You'll have to double-check that information. Along with the Annapolis trek, there was also a heftier tuition. It is certainly do-able for some folks, but for us with two children, it wasn't. That's just a thought to consider. I got some really helpful information from the Private/Independent School thread on DCUM if that helps. |
Thanks! This is helpful. I live in PG, but work in DC, so going to Annapolis...blah....I may have to look at DC $$$$$$$$$$$$$ ![]() |
A friend of mine in Cheverly has her sons in the French immersion program -- I think at Goodard Elementary? They are very happy there. |
I've heard great things about Goddard as well, but with the French Immersion Program, you have to be in by kindergarten. That lottery hasn't worked out for us. But in other news, Goddard is PG's only 2014 Blue Ribbon School. Here are the 5 other 2014 winners in the state of Maryland.
Frost Elementary School, Allegany County Linthicum Elementary School, Anne Arundel County Western School of Technology & Environmental Science, Baltimore County Northern Garrett High School, Garrett County Cashell Elementary School, Montgomery County Robert Goddard French Immersion Elementary/Middle School, Prince George’s County I believe Whitehall was a 2012 Blue Ribbon School and Heather Hills was a 2007 Blue Ribbon School. |
Beddow Montessori and Maryland International Day School are independent schools in the county also in the sense of not being parochial or religious based. |
If your child's father lives in DC, I would totally play the DC school lottery! It killed me that I live less than 10 minutes from three great DC charters but couldn't participate in the lottery for them since I live just past Eastern Ave on the PG side. YuYing, Stokes, and LAMB are all in Brookland. You could also see if there is a good charter near your workplace in DC. In PG county there is the lottery for the Montessori and French Immersion programs at Robert Goddard. We drive into DC everyday for a private school. |
