How "rich" are you - or not?

Anonymous
is there another website where all the middle class moms visit?

Didn't you know $200K is the new middle class?
Anonymous
ok, is there a website where people who make $100K go? I guess I am working class on this site.

You can stay right here. Just don't go to the private school forum, that's all, unless you want to meet a bunch of people with really warped views about what's poor, what's middle class, and what's rich. My comment about $200K was made tongue in cheek based on a thread (well, actually two or three threads) over there about financial aid.

I am cash broke as hell.

My housing is 56% of my take-home pay.

I have a 401K with an employer contribution that I am not yet vested in.

I don't do anything fun, stupid, or fancy with my money.

I don't have a spouse anymore, thank goodness.

I have food in my fridge, my kid's fine, and the roof over my head is paid for this month. My bills are perpetually late on a rotating basis.

Plenty of people have taken a bath all around this year, both in investments and home values.

Mortgage: 1.038 million, 6700/month
Home Equity: approx 800-900K; last year it would have been >1M
401Ks: 250K (last year was 400K)
529s: $35K (2 kids 3/6)
Cash: $35K
Kids bank and brokerage: $5K
Kids wedding fund: $6K
Other debt: about $64K between a car loan and some old credit card debt we are paying off in the first half of this year
HHI: 675K+bonus (last year was 705 total)
Age & occupation: Lawyer 42 & Lawyer 40

The scary thing about this is that there is no guarantee any of our investments (house or portfolio) are worth anything except for good old cash. Once we get rid of our debt we will be stockpiling cash to the extent we can (school tuition and nanny cost take a big bite out of free cash).

18:26 here. I was writing my post at the same time as 18:18, so I did not see hers. Mine was not in response to hers. I am not one of those people who thinks I am poor or middle class, and I did not mean my lead in about people having it hard this year as a comment on her post.

18:18, it sounds like even though it's financially tough the divorce was good for you, and I hope things go on a good path for you.

I'M RICH

I have a loving husband, a loving baby, I'm healthy, I love my profession (in the agricultural field), I learned many things from DCUM, I have no debts.
Anonymous
It is mind-boggling, seriously mind boggling that someone with a HHI of 705K has outstanding credit card debt.

I do worry about that - although I forgot to mention he has a dissability plan which would pay us about 250K a year if needed. That is about half what he makes now - our lifestyle would definitley change. He makes 500+K now......
