We make more than we ever thought we would and have strictly 9-5 jobs that allow us to spend lots of time with our 1 year old DD and with each other (we take home work once or twice per year). We save a lot, could live on one salary if one of us was laid off. We can afford vacations and trips to see family, and can afford to help our mothers who are financially dependent on us. We have peace, means and love to spare. Are we happy? Yes, we are.

I am the above poster, my husband does not work 9- 5 but I am able to be home with the kids. I used to make about 400K and he makes 800K so we decided it was important for me to be at home. I understand the posts about money not buying happiness, etc. But I am happy as are my kids. We raise them to be aware of our situation but that they will have to work hard as we did. Values are very important. Neither my husband nor myself came from money. I will tell you having lived on both sides of the equation, there is a unique kind of stress that comes from money worries that I am very glad not to have currently. Realizing circumstances can change at any time.

How much do you have in your 401K (or other retirement accounts)? $65k
Other Savings: $1M
How much is your mortgage? 0
What is your household income? $130k
how old are you (and spouse)? 36, 38

What profession are you and/or spouse in? Lawyer; Non Profit.

We live modestly, but are fortunate to have other funds to draw from that allow me to be home PT and husband works 9-5. Otherwise, we would be living in poverty compared to other posters in this string, or I would be working 70 hours a week to make the salary needed. DH loves what he does but will never make more than $70k.

I don't consider either of you to be low income. I have 10k in retirement, 1k in savings, make 40K a year and have 2 kids. I'm 34. But loaded-rich in personality and quality of life!
