This is how the decks is stacked? Uh, if you says so.

I don't think anybody should be disappointed, this is the way life is without any type of manipulations.

Perhaps the number above is a reflection of the resources available (or in this case not affordable) such as prep classes etc.
Ie there is some manipulation involved.....

Admitting a student who is under-qualified for mere "demographics" results in a student who will not succeed in the program or, if enough of said students are admitted, a need to dumb down the program.

Whites are too scared to compete with bunch of smart Asians. Number of black and Hispanic applicants remained about the same for the same period and the number of Asian applications increased somewhat. Only the white applications declined. Bunch of wussies. The world is becoming a Global Marketplace. Face the competition and face the challenge instead of running scared.

Nice assumption. Perhaps many students have noted the demographic and cultural changes (robot students, anyone?) at TJ and decided they'd prefer a different environment. I'd call that running sane, not scared. TJ is not right for every competitive intellectually gifted student.

Predictable and same old attack of Asian students are "robot students". If you want to characterize students serious about studying and learning in a rigorous academic environment as "robot students", how do you characterize white students? Drug taking party animals?

They prefer a different environment all right. The environment where they don't have to compete with very smart and ambitious students taking advanced math and science courses and conducting research. There are also many more interesting clubs at TJ than other high schools including social clubs. So go party and do drugs because TJ is definitely not the right place for that.

Exactly right! When all else fails just blame Asian students or their parents for their "robotic" approach to school and studies. Don't ever blame white students and their parents when they underperform for their lack of diligence and priorities when it comes to their studies.

What? From a parent of a white male just admitted to TJ.

Kids not interested in the rigors of TJ don't go. They don't even apply. Even if they are very smart. The system isn't rigged.

If applications at a college or private school declined 15% in just a few years, as has been the case at TJ, people would be asking why. There's clearly a declining demand for what TJ has to offer compared to other schools in the region.

Almost all of the "10-15%" decline is due to less whites applying (not blacks, Hispanics or Asians) and that is the point. The PPs are explaining why that is probably so. Whites being lazy and not wanting to compete with smart Asians. It is interesting that only white applications have declined. Blacks have far smaller chance of being admitted than whites but still continue to apply at about the same number year after year. That should be commended. Whites on the other hand are applying in less numbers because either 1) "there are too many smart Asians at TJ so I am not gonna bother" or 2) "I don't want to apply if whites are not the dominant group in charge". Both reasons should be condemned.

You are right. Comparing the same stats for 2017 with 2018, what is evident is there has been a decline in the number of applicants in the white, black and Hispanic groups and an increase in the number of Asians.

So what is the conclusion? TJ has less to offer to those racial groups compared to other schools in the region but has more to offer Asians?

More like way of life in an area full of public schools in certain areas that are more like private schools. It is not that low income students are not capable, it is that they are less likely to be educated in the same manner as kids in wealthy zip codes.

While knowledge obtained is correlated to income class; intelligence is not.

+1

Some competitive intellectually gifted students view life as beyond TJ and prefer to stay at their neighborhood high school. Through their neighborhood high school (and with strong AP/IB coursework, academy courses, etc.) they can have an equal (if not better) chance to be accepted to highly competitive colleges.

For many competitive intellectually gifted students, life is not all about TJ.

or maybe feel it's not worth it. Other schools may provide a better overall experience.

I agree with this. We decided a good private was a better way to go. DC had heard about the late nights/weekends studying from friends who got in and decided that grind wasn't for him.
