Sat score of 2250 for NY student that was admitted to 8 ivies. Sat average of DC privates??

If you get 100 applications from white, privileged kids for every application from a son of Ghanaian immigrants who scores equally high and does just the same number of extracurriciular activities (perhaps even more), who do you think is going to stand out in the admissions office as someone who has an interesting story to tell?

According to CNN, this kid plays three instruments for the chamber orchestra, sings in an a cappella group, throws shot put and discus for the high school's track and field team, participates in student government and has had a lead role in school plays since the ninth grade.

That together with good SATs and grades and probably great recommendations is quite a package.

BTW, he also was accepted to Duke and three NY state campuses.

I am a white Ivy league graduate who had average Ivy league SAT scores (did much better on ACTs) and average Ivy League high school grade point average but was from a small midwestern town where no one ever sent in applications and that probably helped me get accepted. It at least made me stand out. Colleges are always looking at more than grades and test scores.

PP here -- also I got accepted at every school I applied to. Do you want to call geographicalism on me?

It is not racism. No one is discriminating against a white child since it is unlikely that a white (male) child on LI got those scores and got into 8 ivies.

Long story, but I need to ramble a bit.

Years ago, a friend of mine was looking for a sperm donor. She lived in CA and had the opportunity to meet with donors and see their transcripts. She wanted a smart, tall, blond man, of N. European descent (as was she). She had to pay just to see the files of the applicants, so she just went straight to the Stanford and Berkley students. She had five candidates four from Stanford and one from Berkley. She met them and saw the scores and called me in a panic. Not one of them had consistently high scores. They were all like 85%ile or so. One of the older grad students took the old SAT and his scores were like 640 V, 690 M, and he was a physics student. Only one was a Stanford athlete, and he had a math score of 570! She was disappointed and said that there is affirmative action for white guys too. She had to pay for more files and ended up using a donor from Pomona with high scores, but red hair.

Anyway, I am African American and had scores slightly higher than the students that she profiled and I did not even think of applying to Stanford. My brother and sister both had very high scores like in the 97%ile and 99%ile and neither one got into the ivies for undergrad, but did for grad school. BTW, my brother had tons of extracurricular activities.

The schools are getting MANY African American applicants with high scores, and there will be more to come. This young man stood out in a different way. I have heard that good white male applicants are not as easy to find as you think.

1. The old SAT scores aren't comparable. You have to add. 50-100 points to norm to new.
2. Stanford wasn't nearly as competitive in the old days.

The "older" donor was the only one who was born before 1981, the rest were about 19 years old and that was 6-7 years ago. They applied to college just the year before.

Everyone does it. The banks almost never have donors who have health, academic or social problems, or at least they try not to.
It is a place to start, the you look at personality and other characteristics.

Anyway, don't forget the point...white guys get into ivies with average like scores.

Yes, because you know Black people are incapable of any academic achievements.

No, not really. Those stats don't really stand out at Ivy Leagues. Not to mention, his ECs were insignifiicant and not up to par with most Ivy candidates.

Why?

You know, some people, deep down inside just. don't. want. to. see. black. people. achieve.

It is not even close to a "leading Long Island high school". Over 30% farms.

Love his scores! No way can people scream affirmative action. He earned it! Yay for him and good luck to him in a world full of bigots who will question if he unfairly got his shot.

+1000. Yay! Some folks are just mad that somebody else took a piece of what they thought was their pie.
