There is a lot of testing, but there is less rote memorization and direct teaching these days. Every day, kids are working on several group projects and are in small groups for instruction. Unfortunately public schools have worksheets instead of books and they tend to have fewer questions to answer than writing answers to questions in a book. The questions on the worksheets are engaging and involve critical thinking, but kids don't seem to get as much repetition as they used to. Maybe a good thing to keep children interested in school, but I see some kids falling behind. |

I teach music, so am not as impacted by Common Core. That being said, my sister is a professor at a large university, and focuses on Education Policy in her research. She, and most of her colleagues have told me I should be grateful Virginia chose not to adopt Common Core. (I cannot recall their specific reasons...) |
Thank you for that insightful response. |
... because the CC standards contradict themselves and frequently make no sense, especially when it comes to math, the one subject that leads to correct answers. To the people who write off CC's critics as crackpots, I say read the CC standards. Some are too high, some are too low, some are nonsensical. IMHO, CC should be thrown out or ignored. |
Good idea gone bad. |
SOL's were offshoots of Core Knowledge developed by Ed Hirsch. I am surprised that anyone in the DC area would post this since for many people where you live can easily be determined by what is on the market at the point you buy a house. Arlington/City of Falls Church/City of Alexandria/Mclean [FCPS] are 4 different school districts. Add to that MCPS and DC. My children are older and I remember the radical whole language and the Rainforest Syndrome. https://www.monticelloprepschool.com/why-core-knowledge-matters/ "No more repeated units in multiple years on the rain forest" in the link. VA Standards of Learning exceed CCS and are content related beyond basic reading/language arts and basic math. http://www.doe.virginia.gov/news/news_releases/2010/jun16.shtml History/Social science: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/history_socialscience/index.shtml Science down to the fetal pigs and frogs: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/science/index.shtml |
My apologies I did not meet your posting standards. I wad simply pointing out that educational researchers at a major university find Common Core to be flawed, and that if they were advisng, they would recommend that states decline. Next time I'll be sure to have links to articles and direct quotes. |
Love it-McAwful! I thought I was the only one in the area who didn't vote for this joker! |
Books are so 20th Century. The good schools have Ipads. |
Other researchers think it's excellent. What's wrong with having national standards of what kids should know when? You understand that CC isn't a curriculum, right? That it doesn't tell schools how to teach? |
This was done by a state and local collective. Granted, it had heavy Republican involvement, but that can't be helped. |
You do understand that the CC (standards) drive the curriculum, don't you? It may not tell then how to teach, but it certainly defines what to teach. |
Because it's a socialist Obama conspiracy.
That was developed by conservative Heritage Foundation types. Just like the individual mandate. |
What standards, exactly, do find objectionable? Give me three or four grade-specific examples. |
