Also helps if you are a desired minority.

Not being facetious but are Asians - Chinese, Indians - considered a desired minority?

They're not undesirable but not really a minority anymore. I think "desired minority" would be AA and Hispanic (double credit if the kid comes from a poor family).

I've actually never seen Potomac show up on a national list, or show up ahead of a Sidwell/St. Albans, for example. They have much lower numbers/percentages of national merit semifinalists, for example.

With that said, I'd agree it is one of the best schools in the DC area and that the admissions are very competitive.

Well, thank you, but with all due respect, why should we care whether you agree or disagree?

Different poster but . . . why do you care what any given anonymous poster writes? Your post "with all due respect" post comes off as you being as a snit because the poster agreed Potomac was very good but didn't agree it was some national treasure.

I knew this rang a bell. See an earlier thread where posters cast some doubt on the bona fides of the organization putting out this list -- it is linked to a group that promotes "intelligent design" and attacks evolution. Hee.

While it's hard to find a significant number of objective publications, it has shown up in all of the news article I have ever seen posted on DCUM re: Big 3 (false term) schools. And yes, in several of those articles, Potomac was ranked higher than some DC schools that DCUM considers "Big 3." Just do a search in this forum and you will find the articles I'm referencing.

Does 2 states plus the district equal national?

No, but listed in top 20 for college prep schools in Forbes Magazine probably does.

If it was listed in such a Forbes link, give a link. Otherwise, "search DCUM for links to articles that say Potomac is better than Sidwell/STA/NCS/GDS I promise you they are there" doesn't really cut it. Potomac is strong, but the DC schools have an edge because they don't have to compete with, say, TJ, in attracting students. And the National Merit Semifinalist numbers bear that out.

Actually, isn't it a bit ridiculous to suggest that I do my research on a school's reputation or OBJECTIVE rank (to the extent prep schools are even accurately ranked) by searching what misinformed DCUM posters might have to say? In any event, the link PP was likely referring to can easily be found in first section of this forum, a set of links the administer put up referring to Big 3, Big 5 or whatever. It wasn't Forbes, but rather Worth, and it was listed as 22 not 20, but do you get the point? If you care so much about true facts how about you do a little independent research and post some other links that say otherwise.

Ok, I'll play along:

1. Potomac listed as one of top 5 schools in DC by Washingtonian - http://www.washingtonian.com/articles/work-education/a-private-school-for-every-student/

2. Potomac listed as #22 best school in the country by Worth Magazine - http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/43718.page#295235

3. Potomac listed as #33 best school in the country by Best Schools - http://www.thebestschools.org/blog/2013/04/30/50-private-day-schools-united-states/

Not sure why you're out to get Potomac (maybe you work for a competiive school?), but clearly its one of the best schools in the area, and well-respected nationally. That's not even a question.

This is put out by the group that promotes intelligent design. Why did you keep this on your list?
