I live in Centreville. The retail is pretty much all shopping centers/strip malls, and could be better. There is a very small historic area with a few cute buildings but no nice shopping, nice strolling, etc. DH and I both work about 10 mins away from home, by car. The schools are great. We have almost an acre with a pool and a hot tub and our house is almost paid off. Our gym is like a little resort. OTOH, it is a PITA to get into DC or anywhere in MD for outings and there isn't really a "town" feeling. Unless you are $$$$$, any area around here has some big negatives. Most people seem to weigh schools/commute/price the most. |
This is pretty much a copout reply, since most of the cities on that list aren't technical "cities." It's clear the article meant "cities" in the way people describe places or locals. |
Arlington doesn't need to be on any list for me (and countless others) to buy here. The cities on that list, I'm sure, are also great. There are plenty of cities not on that list (Arlington actually DOES make the list at #12 or something) that are also great. But OP's post wasn't about Arlington, so why does the same anti-Arlington poster need to make everything into a pissing contest about Arlington versus The World? I'm sure we folks who live in Arlington will all concede that Fairfax County is a great place to live, just as most sane human beings would think the same of Arlington! |
Centreville in general is very..paved. Strip malls, condos, townhouses, single family homes, all built up close together but newish or at least newer than closer in. But there is a nice and convenient movie theater, some decent nearby restaurants, the McDonald's/Burger King have the nicest play areas of any fast food establishments that I've seen in this area. Bull Run Park is close. Easy access to 29 and 66 so you can at least get OUT of this area pretty fast which is nice. I think that there are much prettier areas in Fairfax County. But Centreville isn't bad. |
On the other hand arlington is a Frankenstein of teardowns and mismatched houses on small lots. |
True. But parts of Arlington are very walkable, easy access to metro and the city. Lots to do. I don't (and don't necessarily want to) live there, but Arlington is nice. |
Buddy, that chip on your shoulder is really unattractive. |
huh? |
What part of the Centreville post references Arlington? What is your damage? You're like a failed Rohrchack test. |
Alexandria is in Fairfax County and there is a separate Alexandria City. Alexandria in Ffx Cnty is no less a defined community than Centerville or Chantilly or Springfield or McLean. It may be confusing to have two versions of Alexandria, but Alexandria IS in Ffx Cnty. (Note that McLean and Tysons and Springfield and the others are not political subdivisions. They are simply common names for areas in Fairfax County. Likewise, the Alexandria portion of Fairfax County is not a political subdivision, it is equally valid as a common name for a portion of Ffx Cnty. The City of Alexandria is a political subdivision.) |
Tysons is a city |
Yes, and the Mosaic District is a principality. |
Wait, houses are supposed to match? Says who? The "Anti-Originality Must Be Exactly Like Your Neighbor In Every Way" Board? WTF? |
|
Fairfax County = Big. Superior, no. Big, yes. There is an enormous difference, quality of life being one (but not least of them. |
Actually Arlington is a city and a county. I believe it is the only city and county in the United States. |
