Bullis headmaster appears to have the full support of the board to make a BULLIS a football powerhouse. GET USED TO IT .Cilento is a fantastic coach and is elevating Bullis football program to new heights.

Actually, it is. Younger African-American men sometimes use it to indicate friendship/comraderie with other men, white or black. More fundamentally, though, the word can be used or interpreted in a way that is neither positive nor negative, but that informs or describes.

That's all well and fine, but as a mom of children, who happen to be white, I would not countenance their use of the term.

Well, that would be a totally different use of the word, wouldn't it? Unless your child is either Mark Twain or Jay-Z?

Elevating the Bullis football program to new heights? What a joke. Don't schedule DeMatha or Gonzage, you'll lose by 100 points.

He is a good coach tactically and as a recruiter, but as a Bullis fan I was embarrassed by how he acted when the opposing player was down from a blow to the head. I was terrified the injured player might be paralyzed, and was shocked to see and hear how Coach C. behaved to the officials as the injured boy was being treated. And yes, the score was something like 35-0 at the time, so one couldn't even make the argument that Coach C. Lost perspective with a game on the line. I very much hope The Head of School, Dr. B., has a talk with the coach. I'm ambivalent about this intense focus on a few sports, but concede that it's for Dr. B. and the Board to set the course for the school. However, you can have the success and excitement without the poor sportsmanship that was shown by the coach and announcer. And I don't think a Jay-Z song with that pacific language is appropriate for a school event at which many younger kids were present.

I don't know how to get my voice heard at the school on these things, though -- the overall message is to relax and enjoy the ride and that if you critique anything you are not welcome.

I'll be interested in seeing the stats on the new varsity players at Bullis with respect to the NCAA clearinghouse. If the kids don't go on to college, then Bullis is just using them, big time.

Holy Grail?
I don't like Jay'Z but come on...

At lease Justin Timberlake does not use the "n" word, so the lesson is clear.... some can and some can't... hold onto your pearls here come the lyrics...

[Intro: Justin Timberlake]
You'd take the clothes off my back and I'd let you
You'd steal the food right out my mouth and I'd watch you eat it
I still don’t know why, why I love you so much, ohh (Thanks for warning me 2x)
You curse my name, in spite to put me to shame
Have my laundry in the streets, dirty or clean, give it up for fame
But I still don't know why, why I love it so much (Thanks for warning me 2x)

[Hook: Justin Timberlake]
And baby, it's amazing I'm in this maze with you
I just can't crack your code
One day you screaming you love me loud
The next day you're so cold
One day you're here, one day you're there, one day you care
You're so unfair, sipping from your cup 'til it runneth over, Holy Grail

[Verse 1: Jay-Z]
Blue told me remind you niggas
Fuck that shit y'all talking 'bout, I'm the nigga
Caught up in all these lights and cameras
But look what that shit did to Hammer
Goddammit it I like it
Bright lights is enticing but look what it did to Tyson
All that money in one night, thirty mill for one fight
But soon as all the money blows, all the pigeons take flight
Fuck the fame, keep cheating on me, what I do, I took her back
Fool me twice, that's my bad, I can't even blame her for that
Enough to make me wanna murder, momma please just get my bail
I know nobody to blame, Kurt Cobain, I did it to myself

[Bridge: Justin Timberlake]
And we all just entertainers
And we're stupid and contagious
And we all just entertainers

[Hook]

[Verse 2: Jay-Z]
Now I got tattoos on my body, psycho bitches in my lobby
I got haters in the paper, photo shoots with paparazzi
Can't even take my daughter for a walk, see em by the corner store
I feel like I'm cornered off enough is enough, I'm calling this off
Who the fuck I'm kidding though, I'm getting high, sitting low
Sliding by in that big body, curtains all in my window
This fame hurt but this chain works, I think back you asked the same person
If this is all you had to deal with, nigga deal with, this shit ain't work
This light work, camera snapping, my eyes hurt
Niggas dying back where I was birthed, fuck your IRIS and the IRS
Get the hell up off your high horse
You got the shit that niggas die for, dry yours
Why you mad, take the good with the bad
Don't throw the baby out with the bath water
You still alive, still that nigga
Nigga you survived, you still getting bigger nigga
Living the life, Vanilla wafers in a villa
Illest nigga alive, Michael Jackson's Thriller

[Hook]

[Bridge: Justin Timberlake]
You get the air out my lungs whenever you need it
And you take the blade right out my heart, just so you can watch me bleed
And I still don’t know why, why I love you so much, yeah
And you play this game in spite to drive me insane
I got it tattooed on my sleeve forever in ink with guess whose name
But I still don't know why, why our love is so much

This is all PATHETIC by Bullis. WHO CARES how good a high school football team is... I am a Bullis alum and know that a better football team at the cost of better academics is not something I will write a bigger/any check to....

Especially when it brings about the type of controversy the increase in wins has brought about...

Try increasing you academics. Get more kids into better colleges. Retain good teachers. Get a definable culture.

If you really care about HS footbal - move to Texas.

To the PP, I completely agree. The school is advertising STEM (as if that is new?!?) and entrepreneurship (why should this be part of a fundamental education - wait for college).

And sports, sports and more sports. Academic gimmicks and sports are the reason you arent a top school and never will be....

Public school you pay for... but in public school, they dont have academic gimmicks...

This is horrible and disturbing. It also could have happened at any school where kids are allowed to pipe in the pre-game in-game or post-game music. Basically, any time a kid is anywhere near a public address system.

Warning shot: every school in this area and anywhere else in the nation should issue a ruling that clearly states that such language is specifically prohibited.

Not sure about that...Chuchill has an Academy for Mathematics, Technology and Science as well as an Academy for Performing Arts. I know several public school kids who intern at businesses during the school day. These are akin to STEM and/or Entrepreneurship programs in many ways.

Agreed that it could have happened at any area school - it is (sadly) one of the most popular songs on the radio right now. I am not condoning the playing of the song at the game in any way, but the way OP worded the post (or at least the subject heading) at first led me to believe that it was a Bullis song with the offending word. If Sidwell, St. Albans or any area public high school had played the song, I highly doubt anyone would have the same visceral reaction - it is almost like someone is constantly looking for ways to take swings at Bullis.

Yeah, as a white guy I'm going to go up to one of my black companions and say "Hey nigger, what's up?". I'll let you knowhow it goes.

That's a completely different situation; context is everything.

Try depths instead of heights. Cilento seems like he is on a 'roid rage. I fully expect that the coach and the program will cause Bullis to be excommunicated from the IAC unless there are substantial changes in the very near term. Bullis can be like Friendship Collegiate and have to go on road trips to fill out a schedule. Better get all of the donors ready for that one.

Anonymous wrote:The "vibe" at Bullis is all wrong. In addition to the use of inappropriate words in warm-up music, the PA announcer actually used a reference to Viagra in describing a play by one of the Bullis running backs. Here it is, "The Matrix must have taken his little blue pill today because he is getting busy out there tonight." While amusing at first, there is just no place for that kind of commentary at a high school game.

Even worse was the behavior of the Bullis head football coach, Pat Cilento. While up over St. Albans by more than 35 points, he had two temper tantrums over penalties called by the officials. The first related to an ineligible man downfield penalty on a touchdown pass that would have put Bullis up by over 40 points. He should have received a 15 yard penalty, at least, for his outrageous antics. No call by the refs -- amazing. Next, a Bullis player was called for a targeting penalty, using the helmet with the intent to injure an opponent. A very serious penalty that resulted in an STA player's injury and his treatment on the field. While play was stopped for the injury, Cilento went into tirade no. 2 over the call. Totally disregarding the injury caused by his own player, Cilento made a complete ass of himself and showed the kind of leadership he is providing to the Bullis student-athletes. Again, the officials failed to control the situation. The player called for targeting should have been ejected -- did not happen. Cilento's unsportsmanlike outburst and misbehavior was also unpunished. There was a sideline warning given for being on the field of play, but no flag for unsportsmanlike conduct. Amazing display of poor behavior and lack of poise by a high school coach. This was not a close game and there is simply no excuse for allowing this kind of behavior by a high school coach. The Bullis headmaster was on the sidelines and did nothing to intervene as his coach made a mockery of the situation.

Bullis has a very good team and deserves credit for "assembling" a roster of talented players. To have a coach behave in such a disgusting manner is a disservice to the players and the school. The IAC should consider sanctions against Bullis and Cilento. One hopes that the member institutions will act swiftly and sharply to keep this type of conduct at bay.

Targeting is often a purposeful helmet to helmet hit.

So while up by over 35 points the Bullis coach had a penalty bitch? Then a Bullis player targeted injuring the opponent and he has a fit? This clown wants people to target? How about spearing and clip blocking?

Bullis has several obvious recruits. The targeting, clipping, and spearing stuff will haunt those who rely on it in college. Fast pass to the bench.
