Your beautiful daughter will be inappropriately touched? Why do you think that will happen?

I have two CAP kids and the figure of 50 from Eastern seems high to me. I don't know the exact figures, although I know a lot of CAP kids.

I wasn't impressed with the speakers nor the way many of the parents acted during the assembly (talked). I know bad things happen everywhere but I would be worried about DC becoming a target. DD is currently slated to go to a great school. You are more than welcome to take that spot.

I have a mixed feeling about this and understand your concern. These teachers who had a fist fight in front of students are still employed and I heard that their behavior/attitude toward the students are questionable (constantly yelling at them using inappropraite languages (cursing) during the class).

Not the PP, but agree that this is unacceptable. It demonstrates some issues with administration.

This is what they said at the info night, I thought -- maybe I misheard.

If they won't take care of teachers that fight and act belligerently towards students...I doubt that they would handle peer on peer dynamics well. I read online about slap behind (not the word used) week. From going to the open house, I see an utter lack of control. I'm sure the environment works well for smart kids who can handle a tough school environment.

I think the "beautiful daughter" poster was actually referring to Clemente.

That slap-ass week thing at Eastern is from TWO YEARS ago and has been so totally overblown on this board. The admin dealt with it and it was done, and if you think that kind of stuff doesn't happen in the "good" MoCo schools, you are kidding yourself. I am at Eastern frequently and during the day it's as quiet and controlled as any middle school. I honestly think that people walk in there and if it's black/brown kids who are loud and boisterous, it's categorized as rough, but the same behavior by white kids in Bethesda is not seen in the same way.

How would you have organized the meeting differently, given that

1. there were probably about 500 parents plus at least 350 5th graders at the meeting.
2. the meeting was supposed to start at 7, but lots of people kept arriving at least until 7:15 pm.
3. the 5th graders went on a tour of the school (which I think is a good idea).

This is not a rhetorical question.

Well, I would actually go further. If people walk in there and it's black/brown kids, it's categorized as rough.

From what I understand slap behind week was at Clemente too. It is possibly overblown. Many things on DCURBANMOM are that way.

I am not sure how you "overblow" boys slapping the bottoms of girls. It should not be tolerated - period. I don't care whether it also happens at a majority white school - it should not happen in any public school. I know here are lots of things that happen in middle schools and high schools that are difficult to monitor and control (drug use, bullying etc.), but this seems pretty straightforward. Can you imagine if you worked at a big company and your male co-workers organized "Slap-Ass" week and the management had a "oh well, boys will be boys" attitude? I think while an adult woman would find the situation very difficult a teenager would find it very upsetting and confusing.

Well of course, but it wasn't tolerated! People on DCUM act like (1) the kids who did it are some kind of irredeemable degenerates and (2) the school administration didn't do anything or treated it lightly.

In fact, these are middle school kids who often do inappropriate things when in groups. And the administration found out about it, made clear announcements to kids about consequences should anything like this be observed, informed parents via email and note home (and maybe the recorded phone call, too, I don't remember). And it was a non-issue after that.

But people on this board went on and on about how awful Eastern is because of this, how the administration didn't care, etc. etc. I think behind it was a combination of racism/elitism against the non-magnet kids and sour grapes against the magnet kids.

Look at the recent color wars incidents at BCC, and the hazing that went on. To me this was much more frightening, and no one ever said BCC was a "rough" school, or cast aspersions on the whole student body, etc.

Can you explain how a week of slapping others' rear ends is "overblown"? I don't follow what you are saying.

I wrote the comment. Overblown was the wrong choice of words...I should have written maybe it was isolated incident. I'm not defending Clemente though. I think it is horrible and I would be livid if some punk did it to my DD.
